2 | WHEREAS, The Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation of | ||||||
3 | Chicago is one of the largest networks of healthcare, | ||||||
4 | education, and human services in the country, bringing | ||||||
5 | assistance to over 500,000 Chicago-area residents of all faiths | ||||||
6 | and to millions of Jews around the world; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, As the President for over four decades, Dr. Steven | ||||||
8 | B. Nasatir has provided landmark leadership both within the | ||||||
9 | Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation of Chicago and | ||||||
10 | internationally and has raised more than $8 billion to provide | ||||||
11 | help, hope, and healing to individuals, families, and | ||||||
12 | communities in need; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Dr. Nasatir has inspired generous donations from | ||||||
14 | the Jewish community in the wake of natural disasters, war, and | ||||||
15 | famine, including visiting Haiti after the devastating | ||||||
16 | earthquake of 2010; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, As a passionate supporter of Israel since its | ||||||
18 | early days of statehood, Dr. Nasatir has sought to help in | ||||||
19 | times of peace and war, has met with nearly every Israeli Prime | ||||||
20 | Minister, and has befriended world figures, including Natan | ||||||
21 | Sharansky and Elie Wiesel; and

1 | WHEREAS, In the face of threats to Jews around the globe, | ||||||
2 | Dr. Nasatir has shaped the response of the United States and | ||||||
3 | the American Jewish community through advocacy and through | ||||||
4 | committing community resources, most notably the exodus of more | ||||||
5 | than a million Jews from the former Soviet Union and the rescue | ||||||
6 | of Jews from Ethiopia and Yemen; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, In the face of challenges to Israel's very right | ||||||
8 | to exist and in response to the surge in anti-Semitism | ||||||
9 | domestically and abroad, Dr. Nasatir became an early and | ||||||
10 | articulate champion of speaking out in the United States | ||||||
11 | Congress, the Illinois General Assembly, Chicago City Hall, and | ||||||
12 | on campuses throughout the Midwest against the Boycott | ||||||
13 | Divestment and Sanctions movement; therefore, be it
| ||||||
14 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
15 | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
16 | we commend Dr. Steven B. Nasatir for his more than four decades | ||||||
17 | of leadership and service within the Chicago Jewish community, | ||||||
18 | where he has always acted with great care and integrity, | ||||||
19 | following the principle of Kol Yisrael arevim zeh l'zeh - we | ||||||
20 | take care of each other; and be it further

21 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
22 | presented to Dr. Nasatir as an expression of our esteem and | ||||||
23 | respect.
