2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to congratulate the Reverend John M. Ryan | ||||||
4 | on the occasion of his 80th birthday and the 55th anniversary | ||||||
5 | of his ordination into the priesthood; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Father Ryan was born in Chicago on April 20, 1939; | ||||||
7 | he attended St.
Priscilla Elementary School in Chicago, | ||||||
8 | Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary in Chicago, and the | ||||||
9 | University of Saint Mary of the Lake in Mundelein; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Father Ryan received a bachelor's degree in | ||||||
11 | philosophy and a master's degree in
theology; he was ordained | ||||||
12 | into the priesthood on April 30, 1964; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Father Ryan served Illinois parishes as an | ||||||
14 | associate pastor from 1964
through 1984 in the parishes of St. | ||||||
15 | Angela in Chicago, St. Anastasia in Waukegan, Holy
Cross in | ||||||
16 | Deerfield,
St. Eugene in Chicago, and St. Joseph in Wilmette; | ||||||
17 | and | ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Father Ryan served our country in the U.S. Army | ||||||
19 | Reserve as Brigade Chaplain with the 1st Brigade,
85th Division | ||||||
20 | in Waukegan from January 1972 to March 1984
as a 1st | ||||||
21 | Lieutenant; in August 1976, he was promoted to
the rank of |

| |||||||
1 | Captain, and in September 1983, to the rank of Major, all the | ||||||
2 | while serving his aforementioned
parishes; and | ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Father Ryan served on active duty as Major and | ||||||
4 | Brigade
Chaplain in the U.S. Army
from March 1984 to January | ||||||
5 | 1986 at Air Defense Artillery Training Center, Fort Bliss,
| ||||||
6 | Texas; from
January 1986 to June 1986, he attended chaplain | ||||||
7 | school at Fort Monmouth, New
Jersey; from
June 1986 to July | ||||||
8 | 1989, he served overseas as 1st Brigade Chaplain with the 3rd
| ||||||
9 | Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany; from
July 1989 to July | ||||||
10 | 1990, he served as 3rd Brigade Chaplain at the U.S. Army Basic | ||||||
11 | Combat
Training Center, Fort Jackson, South Carolina; during | ||||||
12 | his military years, his education included a Chaplain Advance | ||||||
13 | Leadership
Course and Combine Arms Service, Staff School In | ||||||
14 | Residence; and | ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Father Ryan returned to parish ministry in August | ||||||
16 | 1990; he continued to serve
our country in the Army Reserve | ||||||
17 | from July 1990 until his retirement with the rank of Major on | ||||||
18 | August 1995; and | ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Father John Ryan served as a much-loved associate | ||||||
20 | pastor at Prince of
Peace Parish in Lake Villa from
August 1990 | ||||||
21 | to December 1994; and | ||||||
22 | WHEREAS, Father Ryan continued his ministry as pastor of |

| |||||||
1 | St. Dismas Church in Waukegan from 1994 to 2009 until his | ||||||
2 | retirement at age 70; and | ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Father Ryan continues to minister by assisting at | ||||||
4 | Prince of Peace and other parishes in the area; and | ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Father Ryan continues to be available to minister
| ||||||
6 | spiritually and convivially to the many groups and | ||||||
7 | organizations who
request his presence; and | ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Father Ryan is a wonderful son, brother, uncle, | ||||||
9 | and great uncle; he is a cherished friend and
confidante to | ||||||
10 | many; he embraces all people equally without regard to their
| ||||||
11 | religion, status, race, or gender; and | ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Father Jack loves unconditionally, and that love | ||||||
13 | is returned by his family,
friends, and the many people who | ||||||
14 | have had the privilege of knowing him; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Father Ryan's trademark sense of humor brings joy | ||||||
16 | to all around him; his
wisdom and grace are held in the highest | ||||||
17 | regard; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, It has been said that Father John Ryan is a priest | ||||||
19 | for priests, and he is greatly
loved as a priest of the people; | ||||||
20 | therefore, be it
