2 | WHEREAS, One of the City of Elgin's goals listed in its
| ||||||
3 | Sustainability Action Plan is to "educate the community
on the | ||||||
4 | value of sustainable practices and healthy living"; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, The Elgin Sustainability Commission created the | ||||||
6 | 2019
Elgin Earth Month Planning Committee to help expand Earth | ||||||
7 | Day
into a month-long community awareness initiative on
| ||||||
8 | environmental issues and sustainability practices; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Both Rep. Anna Moeller and Sen. Cristina Castro | ||||||
10 | serve
as honorary co-chairs of Elgin Earth Month in 2019; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, A diversity of different organizations, | ||||||
12 | businesses, and
groups, such as the Gail Borden Public Library | ||||||
13 | District, Elgin
Township, Elgin Community College and many | ||||||
14 | others, are
collaborating with the city to promote | ||||||
15 | environmental awareness
and education throughout April; and | ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Over 20 different events, activities, and | ||||||
17 | projects
are being hosted by a variety of organizations and | ||||||
18 | businesses
across the entire city during April; and | ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Internationally renowned environmental advocates, | ||||||
20 | including
Xiuhtezcatl Martinez and Renee Scheltema, have been |

| |||||||
1 | invited to
Elgin and will participate in programs designed to | ||||||
2 | educate
citizens about what they can do to save the planet; and | ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, It is understood that sustainability will only be
| ||||||
4 | achieved by meeting the needs of the present without
| ||||||
5 | compromising the needs of future generations; and | ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, It is more important than ever for local | ||||||
7 | governments to
work at proactively engaging a mosaic of | ||||||
8 | stakeholder groups and
to defend the environmental progress | ||||||
9 | that has been heretofore
gained; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, It is essential to expand and diversify the
| ||||||
11 | environmental movement to achieve maximum progress; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, It is important for local communities to stay
| ||||||
13 | focused on the constant need for environmental activism,
| ||||||
14 | stewardship commitments, and sustainability efforts; | ||||||
15 | therefore, be it
| ||||||
16 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
17 | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
18 | we declare April 2019 as Elgin Earth Month and encourage all of | ||||||
19 | its citizens, businesses, and institutions to use this time to | ||||||
20 | celebrate the Earth and promote the protection of our species; | ||||||
21 | and be it further
