2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate the City of Dixon on the |
4 | | 100th anniversary of the Dixon Memorial Arch, also known as the |
5 | | Victory Arch; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, The Dixon Arch was built in May 1919 to honor |
7 | | returning Lee County
servicemen; it consisted of a wood |
8 | | framework covered with beaverboard and was
decorated with |
9 | | bunting, flags, and hundreds of lights; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, On June 11, 1919, Dixon held a parade to celebrate |
11 | | the returning servicemen, and
the route included the newly |
12 | | built arch; and |
13 | | WHEREAS, The Dixon Arch was originally designed to be |
14 | | temporary but was reinforced and made a
permanent structure in |
15 | | 1924; it was rebuilt several times throughout the years and was |
16 | | widened to
accommodate the new four lane road that passes |
17 | | beneath it; and |
18 | | WHEREAS, In 1985, the original Dixon Arch was torn down |
19 | | after it could not be repaired; a new arch
made of fiberglass |
20 | | was put in its place and dedicated during Veterans Day |
21 | | celebrations in 1985; it was renamed the Dixon Memorial Arch |
