2 | | WHEREAS, The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance |
3 | | held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all |
4 | | faiths to pray for the nation; it was created in 1952 by a |
5 | | joint resolution of the United States Congress and signed into |
6 | | law by President Harry S. Truman; and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, It exists to communicate with every individual the |
8 | | need for personal repentance and prayer, to create appropriate |
9 | | materials, and to mobilize people to intercede for America's |
10 | | leaders and its families; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, Because of the faith of many of our founding |
12 | | fathers, public prayer and national days of prayer have a |
13 | | long-standing and significant history in American tradition; |
14 | | and
|
15 | | WHEREAS, In 1988, the law was amended and signed by |
16 | | President Reagan, permanently setting the day as the first |
17 | | Thursday of every May; each year, the president signs a |
18 | | proclamation, encouraging all Americans to pray on this day; |
19 | | last year, all 50 state governors plus the governors of several |
20 | | U.S. territories signed similar proclamations; and
