1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Boys and Girls Clubs of America is a national | ||||||
3 | organization of local chapters which
provide after-school | ||||||
4 | programs for young people; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, The first Boys' Club was founded in 1860 in | ||||||
6 | Hartford, Connecticut by three women,
Elizabeth Hamersley, | ||||||
7 | Mary Goodwin, and Alice Goodwin, who believed that boys who | ||||||
8 | roamed
the streets should have a positive alternative focusing | ||||||
9 | on character development; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, In 1906, 53 independent Boys' Clubs came together | ||||||
11 | in Boston to form a national
organization; the organization | ||||||
12 | changed its name in 1990 to Boys and Girls Clubs of America
to | ||||||
13 | recognize the fact that girls are a part of the cause; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Boys and Girls Clubs of America has grown to | ||||||
15 | include over 4,000 autonomous clubs
in all 50 states as well as | ||||||
16 | Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and U.S. military bases; | ||||||
17 | together, these
local clubs serve four million boys and girls | ||||||
18 | each year, and the organization employs over
50,000 staff | ||||||
19 | members; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, One of those local clubs, the Boys and Girls Club | ||||||
21 | of Livingston County, was formed in
January of 2018 when the |

1 | separate clubs in Pontiac and Fairbury joined forces, giving | ||||||
2 | members
the opportunity to attend club functions in both | ||||||
3 | locations; and | ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, The Boys and Girls Club of Livingston County seeks | ||||||
5 | to enable all young people,
especially those in great need, to | ||||||
6 | reach their potential as productive, caring, and responsible
| ||||||
7 | citizens; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, The Boys and Girls Club of Livingston County | ||||||
9 | accomplishes this through after-school programs featuring | ||||||
10 | sports, games,
volunteer opportunities, goal setting, and | ||||||
11 | leadership training, all under the care of trained staff
| ||||||
12 | members; therefore, be it
| ||||||
13 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
14 | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
15 | we commend the positive work being done by the Boys
and Girls | ||||||
16 | Club of Livingston County, as well as the national | ||||||
17 | organization, and we join them in
celebrating national Boys and | ||||||
18 | Girls Club Week, April 8-12; and be it further
| ||||||
19 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
20 | presented to the director of the Boys and
Girls Club of | ||||||
21 | Livingston County as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
