HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Elgin High School is one of the oldest high
3schools in the State of Illinois and is a beloved educational
4institution that has continually aspired to be a place of
5"Education for All"; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Founded in 1969, the school's founder, Charles F.
7Kimball, insisted that "no other public interest, whether it be
8the paving of streets, the building of a bridge, the laying of
9a system of sewerage...is of so great importance to this
10community as the schools of the city"; and
 
11    WHEREAS, There were 12 students enrolled in the first
12class; the present freshman class has 817 students, and the
13course of study has adapted to fit the changing times, from
14classical to commercial, comprehensive/college preparatory,
15and career path; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Elgin High School has occupied four locations, and
17the school has resided on Maroon drive since 1972; in the
181960s, a movement to change the school's name was met with firm
19resolve on the part of the community to remain the Elgin High
20School Maroons; and
 
21    WHEREAS, More than 43,000 graduates have made

1contributions as good neighbors, citizens, scientists,
2artists, physicians, musicians, athletes, factory workers,
3entrepreneurs, lawyers, engineers, activists, soldiers,
4leaders, clerks, inventors, writers, laborers, first
5responders, philanthropists, builders, and teachers to Elgin
6and beyond; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
8HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
9we congratulate Elgin High School on the occasion of its 150th
10anniversary and wish them many more successful years; and be it
11further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to Elgin High School as a symbol of our esteem and
14respect.
