2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Grant St. |
4 | | Julian Jr. of Peoria, who passed away on March 7, 2019; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Grant St. Julian Jr. was born in Beaumont, Texas |
6 | | to Grant Sr. and Leah (Herbert) St. Julian on February 13, |
7 | | 1931; he began playing the trumpet at age ten, participated in |
8 | | junior high and high school bands, and received a full music |
9 | | scholarship for four years from Samuel Huston College in |
10 | | Austin, Texas; his passion for jazz began in college; in |
11 | | December of 1949, he was initiated into the Gamma Lambda |
12 | | Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.; after earning |
13 | | his Bachelor of Science in Biology, he served with distinction |
14 | | in the United States Army in Korea; he then earned a master's |
15 | | degree in microbiology from the University of Texas at Austin; |
16 | | and
|
17 | | WHEREAS, Grant St. Julian Jr. began his scientific career |
18 | | at the United States Department of Agriculture, Northern |
19 | | Regional Research Center in Peoria in 1959 and retired after 32 |
20 | | years of service; his major contributions were in the area of |
21 | | biological control of insect pests; he published 60 original |
22 | | scientific papers, and his work has been quoted in several |
23 | | books and review articles; and

1 | | WHEREAS, Grant St. Julian Jr. belonged to a number of |
2 | | national and international professional societies and received |
3 | | many honors and awards; he served on many local advisory |
4 | | boards, including the Illinois Arthritis Foundation, Heart of |
5 | | Illinois United Way, the Peoria Housing Authority, the |
6 | | Tri-County Urban League, the Salvation Army, and the |
7 | | Contemporary Art Center; he was also a longtime board member of |
8 | | The Heritage Ensemble; he was the chair of the Peoria Human |
9 | | Relations Commission from 1960 until 1964 and served as one of |
10 | | Peoria's Fire and Police Commissioners from 1964 until 1970; he |
11 | | was also a co-creator of the St. Julian Family Scholarship; as |
12 | | a Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., he, along |
13 | | with 11 other brothers, chartered the Peoria Alumni Chapter on |
14 | | November 17, 1973; and
|
15 | | WHEREAS, During retirement, Grant St. Julian Jr. devoted |
16 | | himself to playing his trumpet and also took up the flugelhorn; |
17 | | he played with various local Midwest groups, most notably the |
18 | | Illinois Central College Jazz Band; his relationship with the |
19 | | college led him to create the Grant St. Julian Keep Jazz Alive |
20 | | Scholarship for promising musicians; he was also a culinary |
21 | | artist who prepared all family meals and regularly showcased |
22 | | his talents at large holiday gatherings; he was known for his |
23 | | beautiful garden and lush lawn; however, his greatest joy in |
24 | | life was his wife, Jeanne, and their three children; and

1 | | WHEREAS, Grant St. Julian Jr. was preceded in death by his |
2 | | parents and his sister, Winona Elizabeth St. Julian Frank; and
|
3 | | WHEREAS, Grant St. Julian Jr. is survived by his wife, |
4 | | Jeanne; his children, Grant III, Andrea Renee, and Tanya |
5 | | Suzanne; his daughter-in-law, Judy St. Julian; his son-in-law, |
6 | | Michael Alexander; his grandchildren, Andrew (Paige) St. |
7 | | Julian and Stacie (Peter) Paciorek; and his five |
8 | | great-grandchildren; therefore, be it

9 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
10 | | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
11 | | we mourn the passing of Grant St. Julian Jr. and extend our |
12 | | sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew |
13 | | and loved him; and be it further

14 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
15 | | presented to the family of Grant St. Julian Jr. as an |
16 | | expression of our deepest sympathy.
