2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to congratulate Herbert Wilson
| ||||||
4 | Nadelhoffer on the occasion of his 90th birthday on March 23, | ||||||
5 | 2019; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Herbert Nadelhoffer was born at Chicago Lying-in | ||||||
7 | Hospital on March 23, 1929, the second child of
Carleton and | ||||||
8 | Harriet (Wilson) Nadelhoffer; he was delivered by his aunt, Dr. | ||||||
9 | Luella Nadelhoffer; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Herbert Nadelhoffer came home to the Nadelhoffer | ||||||
11 | Farm at 2800 71st Street in what is now known as
Woodridge, | ||||||
12 | where he was greeted by his strong two-year-old brother, | ||||||
13 | Carleton; his creative
sister, Caroline, followed in 1934; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, The Nadelhoffer Farm, a Sears Catalog Aladdin Home | ||||||
15 | and a timber frame barn built by his
great-grandfather John | ||||||
16 | Nadelhoffer, featured many Swiss Brown dairy cows and 178-acres | ||||||
17 | of corn,
oats, alfalfa hay, and wheat; and | ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, The family farm was also home to work horses Black | ||||||
19 | Jack and Fanny, who were good for pulling
the hay mower and | ||||||
20 | cultivating corn, Ginger and Maude, older horses that assisted | ||||||
21 | with planting, hired
hand John Zalipu, one powerful and scary |

| |||||||
1 | bull, a steel-lugged Farmall F-12 Tractor, and a great deal of
| ||||||
2 | love; and | ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, The Nadelhoffer Farm was recognized as the highest | ||||||
4 | producing herd of dairy cows in the
State of Illinois by the | ||||||
5 | Dairy Herd Improvement Association in 1939 and 1957; and | ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Herbert Nadelhoffer attended Avery-Coonley | ||||||
7 | School, where his mother was a teacher, and Tamarack
School, a | ||||||
8 | one-room schoolhouse where he was one of two 3rd grade | ||||||
9 | students; he also attended Oswego
High School and Downers Grove | ||||||
10 | High School; and | ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Herbert Nadelhoffer graduated from Carleton | ||||||
12 | College in 1951 with a bachelor's degree in zoology and a
minor | ||||||
13 | in English; he went on to earn a teaching certificate from | ||||||
14 | North Central College, a master's
degree in theater from | ||||||
15 | Northwestern University, and, ultimately, a Ph.D. in public | ||||||
16 | address and group
communication; and | ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Herbert Nadelhoffer was drafted in 1953 and served | ||||||
18 | in the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence
Corps, where he conducted | ||||||
19 | security clearances; he was honorably discharged in 1955 and | ||||||
20 | participated
in an Honor Flight in 2018; and | ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, Herbert Nadelhoffer taught classes at Naperville |

1 | Community High School, 7th and 3rd grade
science at O'Neil Jr. | ||||||
2 | High School in Downers Grove, 5th grade at Hanahauoli School in | ||||||
3 | Hawaii, 5th grade at
Lester School in Downers Grove, 5th grade | ||||||
4 | at Highland School in Naperville, and 5th grade at Ellsworth

5 | School in Naperville; and | ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Herbert Nadelhoffer is the father of two | ||||||
7 | daughters, Heather, a beautiful renaissance musician, and | ||||||
8 | Maile,
a beautiful research economist; and | ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, After living away from the farm for a time, | ||||||
10 | Herbert Nadelhoffer moved back to help take care
of his father | ||||||
11 | after his mother Harriet passed away in 1962; his father passed | ||||||
12 | away in 1969; and | ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, The high taxation of farmland during the | ||||||
14 | Quadrennial Reassessment inspired Herbert Nadelhoffer to work
| ||||||
15 | with Congressman Harris Fawell to secure the agricultural tax | ||||||
16 | rollback which reduced property
taxes for farmers caught in | ||||||
17 | urban expansion; and | ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Herbert Nadelhoffer was a strong and informed | ||||||
19 | voice during the 1959 creation of the Village of
Woodridge, | ||||||
20 | which incorporated the Nadelhoffer Farm among others; he was | ||||||
21 | elected and served
on the Woodridge School Board and worked | ||||||
22 | with his friend and neighbor, architect Tom Brown, on the

1 | Rossmoor Woodridge Center project; and | ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, During the riots associated with the 1968 | ||||||
3 | Democratic National Convention, Herbert Nadelhoffer invited
| ||||||
4 | four people to find refuge at the Nadelhoffer Farm; 200 people | ||||||
5 | showed up seeking safety; and | ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Herbert Nadelhoffer created Frogg's Place and | ||||||
7 | rented two farms at Fermilab to provide healthy outdoor
| ||||||
8 | activities for wards of the court residing at the Youth Home in | ||||||
9 | Naperville; he coordinated volunteers,
music, activities, | ||||||
10 | graduate students, and donors; he also taught an Urban Gateways | ||||||
11 | theater class at
Sacred Heart; and | ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Herbert Nadelhoffer is a champion of history, | ||||||
13 | storytelling, and of the public use of the Greene Farmstead; | ||||||
14 | and | ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Herbert Nadelhoffer met the love of his life, Mary | ||||||
16 | Lou Wehrli, on a racquetball court in 1980 and followed
her to | ||||||
17 | the east coast and London; together in 1982, they, along with | ||||||
18 | family and
friends, built their timber frame home at 916 W. | ||||||
19 | Jefferson Avenue in downtown Naperville; it was a
grand barn | ||||||
20 | raising with all generations measuring, cutting, chiseling, | ||||||
21 | soaping, lifting, hammering, and
celebrating; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Herbert Nadelhoffer and Mary Lou enjoyed | ||||||
2 | extensive travel across the United States and
to Canada, | ||||||
3 | Mexico, Europe, India, Nepal, Australia, and New Zealand; | ||||||
4 | during the trip to India, they visited the
Wanless Hospital, | ||||||
5 | the Wilson Clinic, and the Kodaikanal International School, | ||||||
6 | where his grandparents, Alexander and Eugene Wilson, had worked | ||||||
7 | a
century before; and | ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Herbert Nadelhoffer rode an elephant in Nepal and | ||||||
9 | was known as Maja Gunda (Barn Smell); and | ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Herbert Nadelhoffer later founded Nadelhoffer | ||||||
11 | Energy Works to develop land and build
energy efficient homes, | ||||||
12 | including solar homes, double envelope homes, and timber frame | ||||||
13 | homes; and | ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, As a representative of Riverbend Timber Framing, | ||||||
15 | Herbert Nadelhoffer designed and built timber frame
homes and | ||||||
16 | structures for 25 years; he retired in 2008; and | ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, In 1987, Herbert Nadelhoffer became a certified | ||||||
18 | NCTV17 Naperville Community Television producer; while
working | ||||||
19 | there, he wrote, produced, directed, edited, and starred in | ||||||
20 | Black Acre: a remembrance and
Farmers, Corn, Cows & Hazy | ||||||
21 | Memories; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Herbert Nadelhoffer remains a friendly face at the | ||||||
2 | Naperville Edward-Elmhurst Health Center; and | ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Herbert Nadelhoffer enjoys a variety of strenuous | ||||||
4 | activities, including playing flops, 8# ball toss, the coffee
| ||||||
5 | grinder shoulder work out, pull ups, pushes and pulls for legs, | ||||||
6 | breathing deeply, and the hot tub; he is
also a master | ||||||
7 | gardener, a chef extraordinaire, guitar picker, singer of folk | ||||||
8 | songs, painter, sculptor, and
writer; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Herbert Nadelhoffer excels at Bananagrams, | ||||||
10 | reading, and tenaciously figuring things out; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Herbert Nadelhoffer has said he considers the | ||||||
12 | greatest gifts in his life to be Mary Lou and growing up on
the | ||||||
13 | family farm; therefore, be it
| ||||||
14 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
15 | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
16 | we congratulate Herbert Wilson Nadelhoffer on his 90th | ||||||
17 | birthday, and we wish him many more wonderful years; and be it | ||||||
18 | further

19 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
20 | presented to Herbert Nadelhoffer as a symbol of our respect
and | ||||||
21 | esteem.
