2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate the American Hungarian |
4 | | Family Society on the occasion of its 100th anniversary on May |
5 | | 4, 2019; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, The American Hungarian Family Society began in |
7 | | 1919 when families migrated to Bloomington from Austria and |
8 | | Hungary and settled on the northwest side of town, known as the |
9 | | Forty Acres; most residents in this neighborhood worked for the |
10 | | Alton Railroad; the families would meet at someone's house |
11 | | every Saturday, roll back the rug, play some music, and dance; |
12 | | and

13 | | WHEREAS, The first organizational meeting was held at the |
14 | | West Side Clothing Store in January 1919; and
|
15 | | WHEREAS, On April 15, 1919, the officers purchased a lot at |
16 | | 1520 Calhoun Street in Bloomington; on September 12, 1919, the |
17 | | Society borrowed $3,500 from the American State Bank to pay for |
18 | | the building; this was a large undertaking, and four or five of |
19 | | the members used their homes as collateral; the building was |
20 | | erected by the original 100 members themselves and still stands |
21 | | at 1520 Calhoun; and
