HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The Vandalia Historical Society is the active
3group supporting both the Historic Vandalia State House and the
4Little Brick House, both of which are listed on the National
5Registry of Historic Places; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The Vandalia Historical Society provides
7educational and cultural activities for thousands of school
8children and visitors annually and also sponsors a variety of
9fundraisers to help maintain the Historic Vandalia State House
10and the Little Brick House sites; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Vandalia was the second capitol city, after
12Kaskaskia, and home to the second, third, and fourth capitol
13buildings; the fourth building is the Historic Vandalia State
14House, which is located at Gallatin Street and is the oldest
15surviving Illinois State Capitol building, where notable
16figures, including Abraham Lincoln, served in the Illinois
17House of Representatives from 1836 until 1839; and
 
18    WHEREAS, The Madonna of the Trail, a large statue donated
19by the Daughters of the American Revolution and dedicated in
201928, is located on the southwest corner of the Vandalia State
21House grounds and commemorates Vandalia as the official
22terminus of the historic National Road; and

1    WHEREAS, The Little Brick House, located at 621 St. Clair
2Street, has been preserved as an example of Italianate
3architecture and is furnished with period pieces, antiques, and
4early Vandalia artifacts from the mid 1800s; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The Little Brick House contains furniture, china,
6engravings, and books acquired from the families of state
7officers, legislators, and the Ferdinand Ernst Colony; it
8houses the Berry-Hall library room, which pays tribute to James
9William Berry, the first talented artist of Illinois, and to
10Judge James Hall, who established Vandalia as the first
11literary center west of Cincinnati; and
 
12    WHEREAS, The Vandalia Historical Society continues to
13research the history of the City of Vandalia and the Old State
14Capitol to verify and expand the knowledge of their historical
15significance; and
 
16    WHEREAS, The Benjamin Mills Chapter of the Daughters of the
17American Revolution (DAR), which covers Bond and Fayette
18Counties, has been approved by the National Society Daughters
19of the American Revolution (NSDAR) National Headquarters in
20Washington, D.C. to award the Historic Preservation Award and
21Medal to the Vandalia Historical Society; and

1    WHEREAS, This rare and very prestigious recognition will be
2awarded to the Vandalia Historical Society on March 9, 2019 at
31:00 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Greenville;
4therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
6HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
7we congratulate the Vandalia Historical Society on their
8well-deserved recognition; and be it further
 
9    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
10presented to Susan Williams and the Vandalia Historical Society
11and to Lisa Stephens and the Benjamin Mills Chapter of the
12Daughters of the American Revolution as an expression of our
13esteem and respect.
