HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, In early 1869, the Village of Glencoe was a small
3community of less than 30 homes, a few local stores, a country
4school, a church, and a railway station connected by dirt
5roads; it was first settled by Anson Taylor and several German
6and English immigrant families only 30 years earlier; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Village founder Dr. Alexander Hammond and his
8investors from the Glencoe Company developed and planned the
9community before the first plan commission in the early 1920s;
10and
 
11    WHEREAS, Glencoe was granted a special charter by the
12General Assembly on March 29, 1869; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Glencoe is under the leadership of Village
14President Lawrence Levin and Village Trustees Greg Turner,
15Jonathan Vree, Peter Mulvaney, Barbara Miller, Gail Lissner,
16and Dale Thomas; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Glencoe's residential development represents a
18museum of domestic architectural styles dating from the
19mid-19th century, including the work of noted American
20architects William Boyington, Howard van Doren Shaw, David
21Adler, George Fred, William Keck, and George W. Maher, among

1others, renown landscape architects Jens Jensen and Frederick
2Law Olmsted Jr., and, most notably, the third largest
3collection of Frank Lloyd Wright designed structures in the
4world; and
 
5    WHEREAS, With its wooded bluffs and deep ravines that led
6early map makers to declare Glencoe as "Queen of the Suburbs,"
7the beauty of this community has been preserved through the
8conservation of Lakefront Park and enhanced over the years with
9numerous additional parks, the development of the Green Bay
10Trail, and the establishment of the Chicago Botanic Garden in
111972; and
 
12    WHEREAS, The people who have created, developed, and kept
13this community vibrant since its incorporation represent a
14uniquely diverse group of residents from all racial and ethnic
15backgrounds, from all religious backgrounds, and from all trade
16and business backgrounds who have shared at least one common
17bond, their love of and commitment to Glencoe; therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
19HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
20SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we declare March 29, 2019 as
21"Glencoe Sesquicentennial Day" in the State of Illinois; and be

1    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2presented to Village of Glencoe President Lawrence Levin as a
3symbol of our respect and esteem.
