Amends the School Code. Provides that, beginning with the 2020-2021 school year, the teaching of the history of women must include instruction on the significant advancements, discoveries, and contributions made by women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Effective immediately.

2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,

3 | | represented in the General Assembly:
|
4 | | Section 5. The School Code is amended by changing Section |
5 | | 27-20.5 as follows:
|
6 | | (105 ILCS 5/27-20.5) (from Ch. 122, par. 27-20.5)

7 | | Sec. 27-20.5. Study of the History of Women. Every public |
8 | | elementary
school and high school shall include in its |
9 | | curriculum a unit of
instruction studying the events of the |
10 | | history of women in America. These
events shall include not |
11 | | only the contributions made by individual women in
government, |
12 | | the arts, sciences, education, and in the economic, cultural,
|
13 | | and political development of Illinois and of the United States, |
14 | | but shall
also include a study of women's struggles to gain the |
15 | | right to vote and to
be treated equally as they strive to earn |
16 | | and occupy positions of merit in
our society.

17 | | Beginning with the 2020-2021 school year, the teaching of |
18 | | the history of women must include instruction on the |
19 | | significant advancements, discoveries, and contributions made |
20 | | by women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics |
21 | | (STEM). |
22 | | The State Superintendent of Education may prepare and make |
23 | | available to
all school boards instructional materials that may |
