Amends the Higher Education Student Assistance Act. Requires the Illinois Student Assistance Commission to, each year, receive and consider applications for scholarship assistance to African American males who are enrolled in an Illinois-approved educator preparation program in an amount sufficient to pay the tuition and fees of the institution at which the recipient is enrolled. Effective immediately.

1 | | AN ACT concerning education.

2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
|
3 | | represented in the General Assembly:
|
4 | | Section 5. The Higher Education Student Assistance Act is |
5 | | amended by adding Section 51 as follows: |
6 | | (110 ILCS 947/51 new) |
7 | | Sec. 51. African American male teacher scholarship |
8 | | program. In an effort to increase the number of male African |
9 | | American teachers who traditionally have been underrepresented |
10 | | as teachers in elementary and secondary education, the |
11 | | Commission shall, each year, receive and consider applications |
12 | | for scholarship assistance under this Section. An applicant is |
13 | | eligible for a scholarship under this Section if the applicant |
14 | | is an African American male who is enrolled in an |
15 | | Illinois-approved educator preparation program. Each |
16 | | scholarship awarded under this Section shall be in an amount |
17 | | sufficient to pay the tuition and fees of the institution at |
18 | | which the recipient is enrolled.

19 | | Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon |
20 | | becoming law.
