Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides that a school bus may be equipped with an arm extension attached to the stop signal arm that may not extend more than 36 inches past the outermost part of the stop sign, may not exceed 4 inches wide, shall be made of aluminum or a polycarbonate material, shall be illuminated in red on both sides, and may not change the integrity of the school bus. Provides that, if a school bus is equipped with an additional stop signal arm on the rear of the bus, an arm extension may be attached, but it may not extend more than 12 inches past the outermost part of the rear stop sign.

2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,

3 | | represented in the General Assembly:

4 | | Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by changing |
5 | | Section 12-803 as follows:
|

7 | | Sec. 12-803.
(a) Each school bus shall be equipped with a |
8 | | stop signal
arm on the driver's side of the school bus that may |
9 | | be operated either manually
or mechanically. For each school |
10 | | bus manufactured on and after September 1,
1992, the stop |
11 | | signal arm shall be an octagon shaped semaphore that conforms |
12 | | to
49 C.F.R. 571.131, "SCHOOL BUS PEDESTRIAN SAFETY DEVICES", |
13 | | S5.1 through S5.5.

14 | | (b) Each school bus manufactured prior to September 1, 1992 |
15 | | shall be
equipped with a stop signal arm that conforms to |
16 | | standards promulgated by the
Department.

17 | | (c) A school bus may be equipped with an arm extension |
18 | | attached to the stop signal arm. The arm extension may not |
19 | | extend more than 36 inches past the outermost part of the stop |
20 | | sign, may not exceed 4 inches wide, shall be made of aluminum |
21 | | or a polycarbonate material, and shall be illuminated in red on |
22 | | both sides. The arm extension may not change the integrity of |
23 | | the school bus. |
