Amends the Environmental Protection Act. Requires that the Agency define "microplastics" and examine the role of microplastics in public drinking water. Requires the Agency to publicly disclose the results of its testing and reporting. Provides that the Agency, if appropriate, is to consider issuing a notification level to aid consumer interpretations. Requires the Agency to accredit qualified laboratories in Illinois to analyze microplastics.

1 | | AN ACT concerning safety.
|
2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
|
3 | | represented in the General Assembly:
|
4 | | Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section |
5 | | 14.8 as follows: |
6 | | (105 ILCS 5/14.8 new) |
7 | | Sec. 14.8. Microplastics. |
8 | | (a) The Agency, on or before July 1, 2020, shall adopt a |
9 | | definition of microplastics in drinking water. |
10 | | (b) The Agency, on or before July 1, 2021, shall perform |
11 | | each of the following: |
12 | | (1) adopt a standard methodology to be used in the |
13 | | testing of drinking water for microplastics; |
14 | | (2) adopt requirements for 4 years of testing and |
15 | | reporting of microplastics in drinking water, including |
16 | | public disclosure of those results; |
17 | | (3) if appropriate, consider issuing a notification |
18 | | level or other guidance to aid consumer interpretations of |
19 | | the results of the testing required pursuant to this |
20 | | Section; and |
21 | | (4) accredit qualified laboratories in Illinois to |
22 | | analyze microplastics.
