Amends the Department of State Police Law of the
Civil Administrative Code of Illinois. Provides that the Department of State Police may appoint investigators to collect and preserve physical evidence, forensic art, forensic mapping, photography, sketches of crime scenes, diagrams and animations of crash and crime scenes, and any other related duties imposed under law administered by the Department. Provides that the Director of State Police may authorize each investigator employed and any other employee of the Department exercising the powers of a peace officer a distinct badge that, on its face that: (1) clearly states that the badge is authorized by the Department; (2) indicates his or her position of crime scene investigator; and (3) contains a unique identifying number. Makes other changes.

2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,

3 | | represented in the General Assembly:

4 | | Section 5. The Department of State Police Law of the
Civil |
5 | | Administrative Code of Illinois is amended by adding Section |
6 | | 2605-203 as follows: |
7 | | (20 ILCS 2605/2605-203 new) |
8 | | Sec. 2605-203. Crime scene investigators. |
9 | | (a) The Department may appoint investigators to collect and |
10 | | preserve physical evidence, forensic art, forensic mapping, |
11 | | photography, sketches of crime scenes, diagrams and animations |
12 | | of crash and crime scenes, and any other related duties imposed |
13 | | under law administered by the Department. |
14 | | (b) These investigators may exercise all the powers of |
15 | | peace officers for the purpose of crime scene investigation. |
16 | | (c) These investigators shall attend a firearm course |
17 | | approved by the Department. |
18 | | (d) The Director may authorize each investigator |
19 | | employed under this Section and any other employee of the |
20 | | Department exercising the powers of a peace officer a distinct |
21 | | badge that, on its face that: |
22 | | (1) clearly states that the badge is authorized by the |
23 | | Department; |
