Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides that no vehicle owned and operated by the State, a unit of local government, or a subsidiary body thereof shall display non-government license plates. Provides that every vehicle owned and operated by a unit of local government, or any subsidiary body thereof, shall affix a sticker or decal that clearly denotes the unit of local government to which the vehicle belongs, to the license plate or, if necessary, the rear of the vehicle within 6 inches of the license plate, such that it is plainly visible to a vehicle approaching from behind. Exempts vehicles being used in undercover police operations. Effective immediately.

2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
|
3 | | represented in the General Assembly:
|
4 | | Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by adding |
5 | | Section 3-808.2 as follows: |
6 | | (625 ILCS 5/3-808.2 new) |
7 | | Sec. 3-808.2. Prohibition of private plates on public |
8 | | vehicles. |
9 | | (a) No vehicle owned and operated by the State, a unit of |
10 | | local government, or a subsidiary body thereof shall display |
11 | | non-government license plates. |
12 | | (b) Every vehicle owned and operated by a unit of local |
13 | | government, or any subsidiary body thereof, shall affix a |
14 | | sticker or decal that clearly denotes the unit of local |
15 | | government to which the vehicle belongs to the license plate |
16 | | or, if necessary, the rear of the vehicle within 6 inches of |
17 | | the license plate, such that it is plainly visible to a vehicle |
18 | | approaching from behind. |
19 | | (c) This Section does not apply to vehicles being used in |
20 | | undercover police operations.

21 | | Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon |
22 | | becoming law.
