Amends the Criminal Code of 2012. Provides that beginning 180 days after the effective date of the amendatory Act, it is unlawful to possess, sell, offer for sale, trade, or distribute a pangolin product. Provides that unlawful possession or sale of pangolin products is a Class A misdemeanor. Defines "pangolin" and "pangolin product".

2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
|
3 | | represented in the General Assembly:
|
4 | | Section 5. The Criminal Code of 2012 is amended by adding |
5 | | Section 48-12 as follows: |
6 | | (720 ILCS 5/48-12 new) |
7 | | Sec. 48-12. Unlawful possession or sale of pangolin |
8 | | products. |
9 | | (a) In this Section: |
10 | | "Pangolin" means any of the species of Manis |
11 | | pentadactyla, Manis javanica, Manis crassicaudata, Manis |
12 | | culionensis, Smutsia temminckii, Phataginus tricuspis, |
13 | | Smutsia gigantean, and Phataginus tetradactyla. |
14 | | "Pangolin product" means any item that contains, or is |
15 | | wholly or partially made from, a pangolin. |
16 | | (b) Except as otherwise provided in subsection (c), |
17 | | beginning 180 days after the effective date of this amendatory |
18 | | Act of the 101st General Assembly, it is unlawful to possess, |
19 | | sell, offer for sale, trade, or distribute a pangolin product. |
20 | | (c) This Section does not apply to organizations engaged in |
21 | | pangolin research or conservation. |
22 | | (d) Sentence. Unlawful possession or sale of pangolin |
23 | | products is a Class A misdemeanor.
