SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Bernard "Bernie" Forrest of Deerfield,
4who passed away on August 21, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Bernie Forrest was born and raised on the north
6side of Chicago; he was active in Boy Scouts, achieving the
7level of Eagle Scout; he graduated from University of Illinois
8with a degree in chemistry and served in the U.S. Army for two
9years; he married Joan in California in 1953, and they settled
10in Deerfield in 1959; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Bernie Forrest had a distinguished career in the
12food industry; he led several companies, beginning with Golden
13Crown Juice and ending as president of The Long Company and
14owner of the Holsum Bread Company; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Bernie Forrest spent 36 years on the Deerfield
16Village Board, serving as mayor from 1969 to 2001; he was known
17for his strong, visionary leadership and for his innovative
18approaches to village finances; when he left office, Deerfield
19renamed its headquarters the Bernard Forrest Deerfield Village
20Hall; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Bernie Forrest volunteered with the Jaycees,

1where he served as president and founded the Deerfield Family
2Days and the 4th of July celebration, now in its 55th year; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Bernie Forrest was most proud of his family, who
4all knew him affectionately as "Gramps"; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Bernie Forrest participated in an Honor Flight to
6Washington, D.C.; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Bernie Forrest is survived by his wife of 65
8years, Joan; his sons, Kevin (Laura), Sean (Peggy), and Keith
9(Niki); and his grandchildren, Colleen, Kathleen, Brian, Tara,
10Shannon, Patrick, Connor, Jesse, Emily, Lauren, and Julia;
11therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
14Bernard "Bernie" Forrest, and extend our sincere condolences to
15his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
16further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Bernie Forrest as an expression of
19our deepest sympathy.
