2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Lenin
"Doc" Pellegrino on May 3, 2018 at |
4 | | the age of 92; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Lenin Pellegrino was born on August 27, 1925 in |
6 | | Chicago to Italian parents; and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, Lenin Pellegrino obtained both his undergraduate |
8 | | and medical degrees from the
University of Illinois; and |
9 | | WHEREAS, Lenin Pellegrino was a 10th Mountain Division ski |
10 | | trooper stationed in Italy during
World War II and was awarded |
11 | | two Purple Hearts for his service there; and |
12 | | WHEREAS, Lenin Pellegrino practiced medicine in Chicago |
13 | | for over three decades, where he
had offices in Garfield Park, |
14 | | Oak Park, and Austin; he often did not charge patients who |
15 | | could
not afford to pay the fee; and |
16 | | WHEREAS, Lenin Pellegrino was an outspoken civil rights |
17 | | activist throughout his entire life,
marching with Dr. Martin |
18 | | Luther King Jr. in the 1960s; he also served as a physician for |
19 | | Dr.
King's health clinic in North Lawndale, where he provided |
20 | | free medical care against the wishes
of the American Medical |

1 | | Association; and |
2 | | WHEREAS, Lenin Pellegrino founded the Kingston Mines in |
3 | | 1968, transforming it into one of
Chicago's most famed blues |
4 | | clubs; Kingston Mines has attracted the greatest blues |
5 | | performers in
Chicago, as well as several celebrity patrons, |
6 | | throughout the years; and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, Lenin Pellegrino was a longtime, active member of |
8 | | the Third Unitarian Church in
Austin, and was known as an |
9 | | incredibly charitable man, raising money for causes that were
|
10 | | important to him; he hosted fundraisers for the Pathfinders |
11 | | Prevention Education Fund and was
recognized for helping the |
12 | | organization provide HIV/AIDS prevention education,
|
13 | | counseling, and training for African-Americans living on the |
14 | | West Side of Chicago; and
|
15 | | WHEREAS, Lenin Pellegrino was a loving father to his |
16 | | children Laura, Donna, Frank, and Lisa; and
|
17 | | WHEREAS, Lenin Pellegrino is survived by his children, |
18 | | Laura, Donna, Frank, and Lisa; his
nieces and nephews; and |
19 | | grandchildren and great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
|
20 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL |
