2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Peter H. Huizenga of Oak Brook, who | ||||||
4 | passed away on May 2, 2018; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Peter Huizenga was born in a Dutch community | ||||||
6 | outside of Chicago to a family of garbage haulers in 1939; he | ||||||
7 | learned the value of hard work and the power of friendship, | ||||||
8 | faith, and determination early on, as he worked on a garbage | ||||||
9 | truck from 2 a.m. until noon every day each summer; he | ||||||
10 | graduated from Hope College and then served as a Captain in the | ||||||
11 | United States Army Reserve; he then attended law school at the | ||||||
12 | University of Illinois; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Peter Huizenga practiced law at the firm of | ||||||
14 | Hlustik, Huizenga, Williams and VanderWoude; in 1968, he joined | ||||||
15 | his family's garbage business, which became Waste Management | ||||||
16 | Inc., a Fortune 500 company; he held various roles at Waste | ||||||
17 | Management, including Director for 30 years and various office | ||||||
18 | roles; he helped take the company public in 1972, and Waste | ||||||
19 | Management was the largest waste disposal company in the world; | ||||||
20 | after helping build Waste Management, he managed finances for | ||||||
21 | his family as well as other clients as Chairman of Huizenga | ||||||
22 | Capitol Management, an investment advisory firm; he was an | ||||||
23 | early investor in many businesses, including Blockbuster |

1 | Video; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Peter Huizenga was a philanthropist and actively | ||||||
3 | supported many organizations, including the Big Shoulders | ||||||
4 | Fund, Timothy Christian Schools, Christ Church of Oak Brook, | ||||||
5 | Trinity Christian College, Elim Christian Services, Hope | ||||||
6 | College, the Boy Scouts of America, and many other | ||||||
7 | organizations; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Peter Huizenga made a difference in people's lives | ||||||
9 | through philanthropy and business pursuits; relationships and | ||||||
10 | helping others were at the core of who he was as a person and as | ||||||
11 | a businessman; these values were a source of pride for him and | ||||||
12 | his family, whom he loved dearly; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Peter Huizenga was the loving husband of 50 years | ||||||
14 | of Heidi; the father of Betsy (Dave) Bradley, Greta Huizenga, | ||||||
15 | Peter Jr. (Abby) Huizenga, and Tim Huizenga; the grandfather of | ||||||
16 | Elizabeth, Matthew, William, and Michael Bradley, Soleil and | ||||||
17 | Noah Huizenga Giesen, and Hally, Hope, Peter III "Tripp" and | ||||||
18 | Hannah Huizenga; and the brother of Sue Kanis, Virginia | ||||||
19 | "Ginger" Jurries, John Charles "J.C." Huizenga, and the late | ||||||
20 | Elizabeth "B.J." Buntrock; therefore, be it

21 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
22 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |

1 | Peter H. Huizenga and extend our sincere condolences to his | ||||||
2 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
3 | further

4 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
5 | presented to the family of Peter H. Huizenga as an expression | ||||||
6 | of our deepest sympathy.
