HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Shirley McCombs, who passed away on October 2, 2018; and

WHEREAS, Shirley McCombs was born in Schuyler County to Harry and Stella Derry Hunter on June 30, 1937; she married Charles H. McCombs on May 30, 1956; and

WHEREAS, Shirley McCombs will be remembered for her lifelong passion for politics; throughout her political career, she held a variety of positions; in 1975, she served as the Supervisor of the District Office Allotment for the Illinois House of Representatives under Speaker William Redmond; in 1983, she was promoted to House Fiscal Officer by Speaker Michael Madigan; one year later, she was elected as the Menard County Democratic Chairman and served as a delegate to the state convention; and

WHEREAS, In 1986, Shirley McCombs was elected State Central Committeewoman and, in 1988, she received the State Democratic Party Chairman's award for her dedication to the Democratic Party; she also served as an Assistant Whip of the Illinois Delegation at the Democratic National Convention and as an elector at the Presidential Electoral College; and

WHEREAS, Shirley McCombs was known for her enthusiastic support for women in politics and other leadership positions; in 2016, she was able to cast an Electoral College vote for presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and regarded it as the most important event in her life; and

WHEREAS, Shirley McCombs volunteered for numerous state, national, and local election campaigns; she also volunteered for various community and church projects and contributed to the founding of the Menard County Tourism Council; and

WHEREAS, Shirley McCombs was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Stella Derry Hunter, and her siblings, Doris Ebbing, Kenneth Hunter, Donny Hunter, Linda Moon, Harry Hunter, Charles Hunter, and Harriet K. Hunter; and

WHEREAS, Shirley McCombs is survived by her daughter, Robin Mathieu; her grandchildren, Vickie Mathieu and Jackie Tserpelis; three great-grandchildren; her siblings, Nelda Schisler, Susan McFarlin, Larry Hunter, Lois Mccombs, and Deloris Witherall; her sisters-in-law, Phyllis Ernius, Doris Thomas, and Betty Hunter; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Shirley McCombs and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Shirley McCombs as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
