2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the
death of Shirley | ||||||
4 | McCombs, who passed away on October 2, 2018; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Shirley McCombs was born in Schuyler County to | ||||||
6 | Harry
and Stella Derry Hunter on June 30, 1937; she married | ||||||
7 | Charles H. McCombs on May 30, 1956; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Shirley McCombs will be remembered for her | ||||||
9 | lifelong passion for politics; throughout her
political | ||||||
10 | career, she held a variety of positions; in 1975, she served as | ||||||
11 | the Supervisor of the
District Office Allotment for the | ||||||
12 | Illinois House of Representatives under Speaker William
| ||||||
13 | Redmond; in 1983, she was promoted to House Fiscal Officer by | ||||||
14 | Speaker Michael Madigan; one year later, she was elected as the | ||||||
15 | Menard County Democratic Chairman and served as a
delegate to | ||||||
16 | the state convention; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, In 1986, Shirley McCombs was elected State Central | ||||||
18 | Committeewoman and, in 1988, she
received the State Democratic | ||||||
19 | Party Chairman's award for her dedication to the Democratic
| ||||||
20 | Party; she also served as an Assistant Whip of the Illinois | ||||||
21 | Delegation at the Democratic
National Convention and as an | ||||||
22 | elector at the Presidential Electoral College; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Shirley McCombs was known for her enthusiastic | ||||||
2 | support for women in politics and other leadership positions; | ||||||
3 | in 2016, she was able to cast an Electoral College vote for | ||||||
4 | presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and regarded it as the | ||||||
5 | most important event in her life; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Shirley McCombs volunteered for numerous state,
| ||||||
7 | national, and local election campaigns; she also volunteered | ||||||
8 | for various
community and church projects and contributed to | ||||||
9 | the founding of the Menard County Tourism
Council; and | ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Shirley McCombs was preceded in death by her | ||||||
11 | parents, Harry and Stella Derry Hunter, and her siblings, Doris | ||||||
12 | Ebbing, Kenneth
Hunter, Donny Hunter, Linda Moon, Harry Hunter, | ||||||
13 | Charles Hunter, and Harriet K. Hunter; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Shirley McCombs is survived by her daughter, Robin | ||||||
15 | Mathieu; her grandchildren, Vickie Mathieu and Jackie
| ||||||
16 | Tserpelis; three great-grandchildren; her siblings, Nelda | ||||||
17 | Schisler, Susan McFarlin, Larry Hunter,
Lois Mccombs, and | ||||||
18 | Deloris Witherall; her sisters-in-law, Phyllis Ernius, Doris | ||||||
19 | Thomas, and Betty
Hunter; and numerous nieces, nephews, and | ||||||
20 | cousins; therefore, be it

21 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |

1 | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
2 | mourn the passing of Shirley McCombs and extend our sincere | ||||||
3 | condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved | ||||||
4 | her; and be it further

5 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
6 | presented to the family of Shirley
McCombs as an expression of | ||||||
7 | our deepest sympathy.
