| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Dan Bigg, |
| 4 | | who passed away on August 21, 2018; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Dan Bigg grew up in Winnetka and lived most of his |
| 6 | | life in Chicago; in the mid-1980s, he worked as a substance |
| 7 | | abuse treatment worker and took note of the high rate of HIV |
| 8 | | infection among people who shared syringes to inject drugs; and
|
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Dan Bigg co-founded the Chicago Recovery Alliance |
| 10 | | in 1992 to help stem the increase in HIV/AIDS cases in Chicago |
| 11 | | and across the world from the use of dirty needles; a decade |
| 12 | | later, as heroin-related deaths surged, he pioneered the idea |
| 13 | | of putting the overdose-reversing medication naloxone into the |
| 14 | | hands of drug users and their loved ones; as a result of his |
| 15 | | efforts, thousands of lives have been saved; and
|
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Dan Bigg was honored in recent years by the |
| 17 | | International Drug Policy Reform Conference for his work and by |
| 18 | | Chicago Magazine, which named him Chicagoan of the year; he was |
| 19 | | passionate about the physical and mental health of people who |
| 20 | | were often overlooked; and
|
| 21 | | WHEREAS, Dan Bigg is survived by his wife, Karen |
