2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to congratulate the Elmhurst American | ||||||
4 | Legion T.H.B. Post 187 on the occasion of its upcoming 100th | ||||||
5 | anniversary; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, The Elmhurst American Legion T.H.B. Post 187 was | ||||||
7 | chartered by a group of World War I veterans on September 26, | ||||||
8 | 1919; the post was named in memory of three Elmhurst residents, | ||||||
9 | Earnest Timrott, Richard Hintz, and Kinsely Buck, who were the | ||||||
10 | first from the city to be killed in battle; at the time of its | ||||||
11 | founding, the Post had 19 charter members; by 1924, membership | ||||||
12 | had increased to 39; by 1927, with considerable effort from | ||||||
13 | Commander Arden Nance, the membership total exceeded the 300 | ||||||
14 | mark; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, The Elmhurst American Legion T.H.B. Post 187 has a | ||||||
16 | rich history; in the late 1920s, the Post formed the American | ||||||
17 | Legion Baseball League in DuPage County, and has had a team | ||||||
18 | since 1926 and competed in the State playoffs in 1929; in 1976, | ||||||
19 | the team participated in the State finals and placed third; in | ||||||
20 | the 1930s, the Post led the campaign for the construction of | ||||||
21 | the East End Swimming Pool; during the 1940s, the Post | ||||||
22 | purchased its first home and was instrumental in raising funds | ||||||
23 | for the first public display of fireworks at the July 4th |

1 | celebration; in the 1960s, the T.H.B. Post 187 Drill Team was | ||||||
2 | formed, and the Post contributed to the commemoration of the | ||||||
3 | new Elmhurst Library; in 1976, a color guard was formed to | ||||||
4 | compete in state championships; the team won first place in | ||||||
5 | 1977 and 1979; the Post contributed to Disaster Relief Funds | ||||||
6 | and helped with the American Cancer Society Bike-a-Thon in the | ||||||
7 | 1980s; six Post members were awarded 50-year memberships in | ||||||
8 | 1994; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, The Elmhurst American Legion T.H.B. Post 187 | ||||||
10 | continues to serve the community in many ways, including | ||||||
11 | planning and participating in the Memorial Day Parade and | ||||||
12 | Veteran's Day Ceremony, helping to establish the Elmhurst | ||||||
13 | Veteran's Memorial in Wilder Park, providing an honor guard for | ||||||
14 | the funerals of veterans, conducting color guard services for | ||||||
15 | various civic organizations and programs, assisting the | ||||||
16 | Elmhurst Fire Department with establishing an Honor Guard | ||||||
17 | Academy, periodically sending supply packages to troop | ||||||
18 | deployed overseas, and hosting the Great Lakes naval recruits | ||||||
19 | for Thanksgiving; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, The Elmhurst American Legion T.H.B. Post 187 | ||||||
21 | assists veterans with a variety of needs, including obtaining | ||||||
22 | discharge documents, assisting with admission to Hines | ||||||
23 | Hospital, helping the family of a deceased veteran find a | ||||||
24 | burial plot in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, finding |

1 | transportation for veterans to hospital and doctor | ||||||
2 | appointments, and developing educational programs for | ||||||
3 | veterans; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, The Elmhurst American Legion T.H.B. Post 187 helps | ||||||
5 | local students by providing information about the Post and | ||||||
6 | veterans, awarding scholarships and other school awards to | ||||||
7 | local students on an annual basis, and teaching scouts the | ||||||
8 | fundamentals of flag etiquette, patriotism, and the value of | ||||||
9 | community service; they also send veterans to Elmhurst College | ||||||
10 | classes to speak about military service; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, The American Legion was chartered by Congress as a | ||||||
12 | patriotic, mutual-help, war-time veteran's organization in | ||||||
13 | 1919; the American Legion is a community-service organization | ||||||
14 | with nearly three million members organized into 15,000 Posts | ||||||
15 | worldwide; the Elmhurst American Legion has been serving | ||||||
16 | veterans and the Elmhurst community for nearly 100 years; the | ||||||
17 | membership includes 550 veterans, 140 Women's Auxiliary, and | ||||||
18 | 127 Sons of the American Legion Squadron; therefore, be it
| ||||||
19 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
20 | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
21 | congratulate the Elmhurst American Legion T.H.B. Post 187 on | ||||||
22 | the occasion of its upcoming 100th anniversary, and we commend | ||||||
23 | their service to veterans and their community; we wish them |

1 | many more successful years; and be it further
| ||||||
2 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
3 | presented to the Elmhurst American Legion T.H.B. Post 187 as an | ||||||
4 | expression of our esteem and respect.
