|
2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate John Grey of Winchester as |
4 | | he celebrates 40 years as Sergeant at Arms of the Julian Wells |
5 | | Post 442 American Legion; we also recognize his dedication in |
6 | | leading said Post at every parade and public event in |
7 | | Winchester and throughout Scott County, including the Fourth of |
8 | | July parades and the World Famous Burgoo Festival; and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, John Grey served in the United States Army for two |
10 | | years and was a member of the Fourth Infantry Division in |
11 | | Vietnam, where he was with the first American ground unit to |
12 | | fight in Cambodia; he received many medals for his |
13 | | distinguished service to his country, including two Purple |
14 | | Hearts, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, and the Republic of |
15 | | Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm; and
|
16 | | WHEREAS, After he was discharged from the Army, John Grey |
17 | | continued his public service by working as a mail carrier in |
18 | | the City of Winchester for 33 years; he accumulated more than |
19 | | 112,000 miles by walking and running his route; he added |
20 | | countless more miles with his training for marathons; and
|
21 | | WHEREAS, John Grey ran for the Winchester Community Unit |
22 | | School District Board and won three elections; he also shared |

1 | | his knowledge and love of running by first volunteering for, |
2 | | and then coaching, the track teams for both boys and girls; and
|
3 | | WHEREAS, John Grey's service in Vietnam continues to affect |
4 | | his health, as he still has shrapnel in his leg and is battling |
5 | | cancer due to the side effects of Agent Orange; despite these |
6 | | challenges, he maintains a positive attitude; and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, When asked about his birthday, John Grey always |
8 | | states that it is on All Saint's Day before he says November 1, |
9 | | a request by his grandmother that he still honors; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, John Grey is devoted to his two daughters, Hannah |
11 | | and Cassie, and to his grandchildren, Carmen and Eli, his |
12 | | siblings, Elaine Fletcher, Nancy Main, Laura Wood, Barb |
13 | | Harbison, and Tom Grey, and all of his nieces and nephews; |
14 | | therefore, be it

15 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
16 | | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
17 | | congratulate John Grey for his service to his country, the |
18 | | State of Illinois, and the community and students of |
19 | | Winchester; and be it further

20 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
21 | | presented to John Grey as an expression of our esteem and |
