2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are pleased to congratulate John "Sam" Vancil | ||||||
4 | on his retirement from the DuQuoin Community Unit School | ||||||
5 | District #300 Board of Education; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Sam Vancil is the longest, continuous School Board | ||||||
7 | member in the State of Illinois, and served the DuQuoin | ||||||
8 | community for 58 years; he organized the Sunfield Grade School | ||||||
9 | District Board in 1958, which consolidated into the Duquoin | ||||||
10 | District #300 School Board in 1968; he served in many | ||||||
11 | positions, including President, Vice President, and Secretary; | ||||||
12 | he retired on June 1, 2017; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Sam Vancil was born on a homestead in Sunfield to | ||||||
14 | Miles and Annabelle Vancil on June 21, 1931; one of three boys, | ||||||
15 | he attended Sunfield Grade School and graduated from DuQuoin | ||||||
16 | High School; he served as a radar technician in the United | ||||||
17 | States Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Texas | ||||||
18 | and Washington; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Sam Vancil married Dorothy Elaine Timpner on | ||||||
20 | August 9, 1952, and they recently celebrated their 65th wedding | ||||||
21 | anniversary; they have five children, Deborah, David, Dennis, | ||||||
22 | Darryl, and Denise, nine grandchildren, and 16 |

1 | great-grandchildren; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, After his military service, Sam Vancil took over a | ||||||
3 | farming operation from his uncles; he worked as a shovel | ||||||
4 | operator at Burning Star #2 for 37 years; he then accepted a | ||||||
5 | position with the Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals, | ||||||
6 | where he served as Assistant Director until his retirement 12 | ||||||
7 | years later; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Sam Vancil played an instrumental role in the | ||||||
9 | construction of the District's new K-8 School complex in 1999 | ||||||
10 | and the new DuQuoin High School, which was completed in 2012; | ||||||
11 | and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Sam Vancil is an active member of the Sunfield | ||||||
13 | United Methodist Church, where he is a member of the choir, a | ||||||
14 | Chairperson on the Church Council, and a Sunday School teacher; | ||||||
15 | he helped complete the capital project, which raised money to | ||||||
16 | build a new church, fellowship hall, and parsonage; therefore, | ||||||
17 | be it

18 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
19 | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
20 | congratulate John "Sam" Vancil on his retirement from the | ||||||
21 | DuQuoin Community Unit School District #300 Board of Education | ||||||
22 | and we recognize his strong commitment to the Sunfield and |

1 | DuQuoin communities, his decades of hard work, and his | ||||||
2 | dedication to the to the future generations of Illinois; and be | ||||||
3 | it further

4 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||

6 | respect.
