2 | | WHEREAS, The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families |
3 | | (TANF) program was created by Congress in 1996 to help needy |
4 | | families achieve self-sufficiency by providing temporary |
5 | | financial assistance for pregnant women and families with one |
6 | | or more dependent children; and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, Since 1996, the real dollar amount in State |
8 | | funding for Illinois' TANF program has been effectively reduced |
9 | | by 25%; this reduction is not only dangerous for the families |
10 | | who are depending on TANF benefits for stability, but also puts |
11 | | a greater burden on caseworkers who are tasked with assisting |
12 | | these families to become self-sufficient; and

13 | | WHEREAS, The General Assembly must take up the matter of |
14 | | further investing in Illinois' TANF program and see to it that |
15 | | the State assists in lifting Illinois' most vulnerable families |
16 | | out of poverty to become self-sufficient contributors to the |
17 | | State's economy; therefore, be it
|
18 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
19 | | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that the |
20 | | House asks that the General Assembly restore funding for |
21 | | Illinois' Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program to |
22 | | the original funding levels established in 1996.
