2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives wish to recognize the 175th anniversary of the |
4 | | founding of the Pike Press; and

5 | | WHEREAS, The Pike Press began in 1842 with the first |
6 | | newspaper in Pike County, The Sucker and Farmers Record; and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, The paper's name was
changed to The Whig Free |
8 | | Press in 1846, which was owned and edited by John Nicolay from |
9 | | 1849 to
1856; the name was changed to the Pike County Journal |
10 | | in 1860, in which, Nicolay, one of Abraham Lincoln's three |
11 | | private secretaries from Pike County, wrote his
editorial |
12 | | endorsement of Abraham Lincoln for president in February of |
13 | | 1960; in March of 1868, the paper became The Old Flag; in 1893, |
14 | | the paper was renamed The Pike County Republican; finally, in |
15 | | 1968 it became The Pike Press; and
|
16 | | WHEREAS, The Pike Press is celebrating its 175th |
17 | | anniversary with the June 7 edition of the paper by offering |
18 | | full page ads for the bargain price of $175 for that issue; |
