HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate the Hellenic Bar Association's newly elected officers and board of directors; and

WHEREAS, The Hellenic Bar Association's Judges Night will take place on June 8, 2017; this event is not only an opportunity for judiciary from Cook, Lake, DuPage, and Will Counties to mingle with attorneys from the Greek community but also to formally introduce the newly elected president, officers, and board of directors; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Charles P. Kocoras, U.S. District Court Judge for the Northern District of Illinois, will administer the oath of office to the incoming President, Constantine (Dean) Kanellos and install the new officers and directors for the coming bar year; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Timothy C. Evans, Chief Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County will be honored with the Hellenic Bar Association's Socrates Dikastes Award for his years of exemplary service on the bench; and

WHEREAS, In February of 1951, a group of Greek attorneys founded the Hellenic Bar Association of Illinois, the largest and oldest Greek-American bar association in Illinois; most of the early members were born in Greece, came to this country as young immigrants, and were educated in colleges and law schools in Chicago; as time went on, first generation Greek American lawyers became more prevalent; nowadays, the Hellenic Bar Association consists of multi-generational Greek Americans and Philhellenes; and

WHEREAS, The Hellenic Bar Association promotes and co-sponsors many events throughout the year such as legal education seminars and an annual Law Day Essay Program for elementary school children; the Hellenic Bar Association continues to give back to its community through its charitable arm, the Hellenic Bar Foundation; every year, the proceeds from the gala dinner are directed towards scholarships given to deserving law students; and

WHEREAS, The Hellenic Bar Association has grown into a thriving, benevolent and dynamic organization proud of its heritage and looking onward to future successes in the 21st century; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the Hellenic Bar Association's newly elected officers and board of directors; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to President Constantine (Dean) Kanellos and the new officers and directors of the Hellenic Bar Association.
