HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Over the last three years, the people of Venezuela have taken to the streets in peaceful protests to speak out against the atrocities of the government which has resulted in a devastating food and medicine shortage, political prisoners, human rights violations, increased violence, and the largest street demonstration in Venezuelan history; and

WHEREAS, The Venezuelan Supreme Court, in conjunction with President Nicolas Maduro, has wrongfully sought to hinder the progress of the Legislative Branch of the Venezuelan government; and

WHEREAS, Illinois is home to many Venezuelan immigrants and descendants and recognizes the political strife facing Venezuelans in their home country; and

WHEREAS, We recognize and defend the constitutional rights of Venezuelan people under the Venezuelan Constitution, which are currently being violated; and

WHEREAS, As of now, dozens of people have lost their lives due to the Venezuelan government's violent response to peaceful protests and the aggressive involvement of military forces; and

WHEREAS, It has been found that numerous protestors are students and that their human rights have been trampled, which is a great cause of concern; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize the people of Venezuela and their entitlement to fair elections, release of political prisoners, freedom of speech and assembly, and amends due for all human rights violations against them.
