2 | | WHEREAS, Each year, the Lupus Society of Illinois |
3 | | designates May as Lupus Awareness Month
to show support for the |
4 | | estimated 65,000 Illinois residents who have lupus; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Lupus is an acute, chronic, and lifelong |
6 | | autoimmune disease in which the immune
system is unbalanced, |
7 | | causing inflammation and tissue damage to virtually every organ
|
8 | | system in the body; and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, Lupus can affect any part of the body, including |
10 | | the skin, lungs, heart, kidneys, and
brain; no organ is spared; |
11 | | the disease can cause seizures, strokes, heart attacks,
|
12 | | miscarriages, and organ failure; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, While lupus strikes mostly women of childbearing |
14 | | age, no one is safe; African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, |
15 | | Asians, and Native Americans are two to three times
more likely |
16 | | to develop lupus - a disparity that remains unexplained; and
|
17 | | WHEREAS, Lupus can be particularly difficult to diagnose |
18 | | because its symptoms are similar to
those of many other |
19 | | illnesses, and major gaps exist in understanding the causes and
|
20 | | consequences of lupus; more than half of all people with lupus |
21 | | take four or more years and
visit three or more doctors before |
