HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, After years of mismanagement, the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development made the announcement to close the McBride and Elmwood public housing buildings of the Alexander County Housing Authority, rather than make any efforts to improve the living conditions of the people who live there; and

WHEREAS, It is unjust to evict the families currently residing in these housing developments, many of whom have no other place to turn; and

WHEREAS, The closure of these housing developments will not only cause devastation to the community of Cairo, but to Illinois as a whole, since many families living in these housing developments may choose to leave Southern Illinois or the State altogether; and

WHEREAS, The Department of Housing and Urban Development is shifting responsibility for the Alexander County Housing Authority and putting the families and the people of Cairo at risk; and

WHEREAS, The Governor must stand up for the people whom he represents and take action to help those that are being negatively impacted by the Cairo housing closures; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we strongly urge the Governor and the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to direct funds that would allow the rebuilding and repair of the Alexander County Housing Development in Cairo; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Governor, the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, the Alexander County Housing Authority, and the McBride and Elmwood public housing buildings.
