2 | WHEREAS, President Barack H. Obama served as the 44th | ||||||
3 | President of the United States of America from January 20, 2009 | ||||||
4 | to January 20, 2017; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, President Obama, the first African American | ||||||
6 | elected to the American Presidency was born in Hawaii; he was | ||||||
7 | the first President born out of the contiguous United States; | ||||||
8 | and | ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, President Obama attended Occidental College in | ||||||
10 | Los Angeles and graduated from Columbia College in New York in | ||||||
11 | 1983; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, President Obama worked as a community organizer on | ||||||
13 | the South Side of Chicago from June of 1985 to May of 1988; he | ||||||
14 | entered Harvard Law School in the fall of 1988, returning to | ||||||
15 | Chicago during summers, where he worked as an associate at | ||||||
16 | various law firms; he permanently returned to Chicago in 1991 | ||||||
17 | after earning his Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, President Obama taught constitutional law at the | ||||||
19 | University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004; he also | ||||||
20 | worked as a lawyer, specializing in civil rights litigation and | ||||||
21 | neighborhood economic development; and |

1 | WHEREAS, President Obama was elected to the Illinois State | ||||||
2 | Senate in 1996, representing the Illinois 13th District; he was | ||||||
3 | re-elected to the Illinois Senate in 1998 and 2002; and | ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, President Obama was elected to represent Illinois | ||||||
5 | in the United States Senate in 2004 with over 70% of the vote; | ||||||
6 | and | ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, President Obama announced his candidacy for | ||||||
8 | President of the United States of America in February of 2007 | ||||||
9 | from the steps of the Old State Capitol Building in | ||||||
10 | Springfield, the site of President Abraham Lincoln's 1858 | ||||||
11 | "House Divided" speech; he was elected President in 2008 with | ||||||
12 | just under 53% of the popular vote; he was re-elected in 2012; | ||||||
13 | and

14 | WHEREAS, As President of the United States of America, | ||||||
15 | President Obama has been a progressive leader on numerous | ||||||
16 | issues including, domestic policy, LGBTQ rights, women's | ||||||
17 | rights, healthcare, economic policy, environmental policy, | ||||||
18 | energy, gun control, internet policy, and foreign policy; and | ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, President Obama was awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace | ||||||
20 | Prize for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen | ||||||
21 | international diplomacy and cooperation between people; and |

1 | WHEREAS, President Obama is an avid fan of the Chicago | ||||||
2 | White Sox; in 2011, he hosted the Chicago Bears at the White | ||||||
3 | House to celebrate their 1985 Super Bowl victory; he hosted the | ||||||
4 | Chicago Cubs at the White House to celebrate their 2016 World | ||||||
5 | Series Championship as one of his last official acts as | ||||||
6 | President; and

7 | WHEREAS, The Barack Obama Presidential Center will be | ||||||
8 | hosted by the University of Chicago and will be located in | ||||||
9 | Jackson Park on the South Side of Chicago; once completed it | ||||||
10 | will become the 14th site in the National Archives and Records | ||||||
11 | Administration presidential library system; therefore, be it
| ||||||
12 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
13 | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
14 | declare August 4, 2017 and August 4, 2018 as "President Barack | ||||||
15 | Obama Day" in honor of the 44th President of the United States | ||||||
16 | of America and in recognition of his historic and | ||||||
17 | transformative presidency; and be it further
| ||||||
18 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
19 | presented to President Obama as a symbol of our respect and | ||||||
20 | esteem.
