1 | | WHEREAS, The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is |
2 | | a free trade agreement between the United States, Mexico, and |
3 | | Canada, which creates a trilateral trade bloc in North America; |
4 | | and |
5 | | WHEREAS, President Trump claims that he received calls in |
6 | | April of 2017 from the President of Mexico and the Prime |
7 | | Minister of Canada asking to renegotiate NAFTA rather than |
8 | | terminate it, to which he agreed; therefore, be it |
9 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
10 | | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
11 | | formally invite Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto to address |
12 | | a joint session of the Illinois General Assembly to discuss the |
13 | | proposed border wall, the impact of a 20% tariff on goods |
14 | | imported from Mexico to pay for the wall, the economic impact |
15 | | of the wall, and the impact that President Trump's policies |
16 | | will have on Illinois and Mexico; and be it further |
17 | | RESOLVED, That we invite Canadian Prime Minister Justin |
18 | | Trudeau to discuss trade issues between Canada and Illinois; |
19 | | and be it further |
20 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
21 | | delivered to Enrique Pena Nieto, President of Mexico, and |
22 | | Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada."
