2 | | WHEREAS, According to the Centers for Disease Control and |
3 | | Prevention, motor vehicle crashes are a
leading cause of death |
4 | | in the United States; in 2014, more than 33,700 people died |
5 | | from motor vehicle
crashes; for every death there are numerous |
6 | | devastating injuries and costly emergency room visits; and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, Drivers on the corridor of I-80 between the exit |
8 | | to I-55 in Joliet and the exit
to Route 30 in New Lenox, suffer |
9 | | high rates of congestion; the corridor has witnessed a total of |
10 | | eight
fatalities and 1,456 crashes since 2011; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, These traffic accidents and the resulting |
12 | | injuries and deaths are tragedies for
the families, the |
13 | | communities of the victims involved, and for the people of |
14 | | Illinois; and
|
15 | | WHEREAS, The Illinois Department of Transportation is |
16 | | administering a study of I-80
from Ridge Road to US Route 30 in |
17 | | preparation for the reconstruction of I-80 structures in that
|
18 | | corridor; the reconstruction may not occur for several years; |
19 | | and
|
20 | | WHEREAS, Motorists would be safer and would take more |
21 | | precautions while driving if
they had advanced knowledge of the |
