HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death in the United States; in 2014, more than 33,700 people died from motor vehicle crashes; for every death there are numerous devastating injuries and costly emergency room visits; and

WHEREAS, Drivers on the corridor of I-80 between the exit to I-55 in Joliet and the exit to Route 30 in New Lenox, suffer high rates of congestion; the corridor has witnessed a total of eight fatalities and 1,456 crashes since 2011; and

WHEREAS, These traffic accidents and the resulting injuries and deaths are tragedies for the families, the communities of the victims involved, and for the people of Illinois; and

WHEREAS, The Illinois Department of Transportation is administering a study of I-80 from Ridge Road to US Route 30 in preparation for the reconstruction of I-80 structures in that corridor; the reconstruction may not occur for several years; and

WHEREAS, Motorists would be safer and would take more precautions while driving if they had advanced knowledge of the congestion and dangers associated with the above-mentioned corridor along I-80; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we urge the Illinois Department of Transportation to erect signage notifying motorists of congestion and possible dangers along Interstate 80 between the exit to I-55 in Joliet and Route 30 in New Lenox; and be it further

RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be delivered to the Secretary of the Department of Transportation and the Mayor of the City of Joliet.
