1 | HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

2 | WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that the Illinois General
| ||||||
3 | Assembly pays honor and respect to truly great individuals; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, General Wladyslaw Anders was born in 1892 in a | ||||||
5 | small town just west of Warsaw in what would one day become the | ||||||
6 | country of Poland; he joined the newly formed Polish military | ||||||
7 | in 1918, attaining the rank of General in 1934; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, At the start of World War II, General Anders | ||||||
9 | fought with the Polish Army; he was captured by the Soviets and | ||||||
10 | forced into the USSR Army to fight against the Nazis; he | ||||||
11 | escaped and formed the Polish 2nd Corps of the Polish Armed | ||||||
12 | Forces in exile; he fought for the liberation of Italy, leading | ||||||
13 | the
successful campaign to free Monte Cassino in May of 1944; | ||||||
14 | and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, After the war, General Anders remained in England | ||||||
16 | with the Polish Army in exile, advocating for a free and | ||||||
17 | democratic Poland, which had become a satellite state of the | ||||||
18 | USSR; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, General Anders passed away in 1970 and his body | ||||||
20 | lay in state in London; and

1 | WHEREAS, General Anders was later laid to rest alongside | ||||||
2 | the thousands of fallen soldiers from "Anders' Army" at the | ||||||
3 | Polish War Cemetery in Monte Cassino, Italy; many of those who | ||||||
4 | fought with him now lie in rest at Maryhill Cemetery in Niles; | ||||||
5 | therefore, be it
| ||||||
6 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
7 | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE SENATE | ||||||
8 | CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the section of Milwaukee | ||||||
9 | Avenue in Niles, as it runs from Main Street to Dempster Street | ||||||
10 | as "General Wladyslaw Anders Memorial Way"; and be it further | ||||||
11 | RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
| ||||||
12 | is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
| ||||||
13 | State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
| ||||||
14 | giving notice of the name "General Wladyslaw Anders Memorial | ||||||
15 | Way"; and be it further
| ||||||
16 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||
17 | presented to the family of General Anders, Niles Mayor Andrew | ||||||
18 | Przybylo, and the Secretary of the Illinois Department of | ||||||
19 | Transportation.
