Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides that each school bus manufactured on or after the effective date of this bill and purchased for use in this State by a school district or a school bus company under contract with a school district shall be equipped with a lap belt or any other federally approved restraint system in a number sufficient to allow each passenger being transported to use a separate belt or restraint system. Effective January 1, 2019.

2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,

3 | | represented in the General Assembly:

4 | | Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by changing |
5 | | Section 12-807 as follows:
|

7 | | Sec. 12-807. Seat belt for driver and passengers . |
8 | | (a) Each school bus shall be equipped with a retractable |
9 | | lap belt assembly
for the driver's seat. No school bus shall be |
10 | | operated unless the driver
has properly restrained himself with |
11 | | the lap belt assembly.

12 | | (b) Each school bus manufactured on or after the effective |
13 | | date of this amendatory Act of the 100th General Assembly and |
14 | | purchased for use in this State by a school district or a |
15 | | school bus company under contract with a school district shall |
16 | | be equipped with a lap belt or any other federally approved |
17 | | restraint system under 49 CFR 571.222 in a number sufficient to |
18 | | allow each passenger being transported to use a separate seat |
19 | | belt or restraint system. |
