SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Menopause and perimenopause impact every woman in
3Illinois who lives to reach midlife, affecting 51% of our
4State population; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Women can experience menopause and perimenopause
6symptoms, including brain fog, fatigue, insomnia, chills, hot
7flashes, sleep disturbance, depression, and anxiety, anywhere
8between two to ten years; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Ninety-four percent of women report being
10inadequately informed about menopause and other common female
11health issues; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Seventy percent of women who seek medical care
13for menopause symptoms do not receive the necessary treatment,
14and only 19% of women aged 40 to 60 receive a menopause
15diagnosis; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Seventy-three percent of women are not treating
17their menopause symptoms, leading to unnecessary health risks
18and economic burdens; and
 
19    WHEREAS, The long-term effects of untreated perimenopause
20and menopause symptoms can increase risks for cardiovascular

1disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimer's disease, and diabetes; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Training in the delivery of menopause care for
3medical students and physicians is severely lacking, and there
4are fewer than 100 physicians certified as menopause health
5professionals in Illinois; and
 
6    WHEREAS, It is estimated about $150 billion is lost
7globally due to menopause symptoms affecting worker
8productivity; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Many critical questions about caring for women
10experiencing menopause remain unanswered due to a lack of
11research; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton and the
13Illinois Council of Women and Girls have made this topic a
14priority in their work and aim to lead the nation in advocating
15for perimenopause and menopause policies; and
 
16    WHEREAS, It is imperative to raise awareness about the
17expansive effects that menopause and perimenopause have on
18women's health and how women can advocate for themselves;
19therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL

1ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF
2REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING HEREIN, that we declare October 12
3through October 18, 2025 as Menopause Awareness Week in the
4State of Illinois.
