2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Earl | ||||||
4 | Wallace "Wally" Henderson, Jr. of Springfield, who passed away | ||||||
5 | on April 19, 2016 at the age of 85; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Wally Henderson was a longtime Springfield | ||||||
7 | architect, preservationist, and community activist; he was the | ||||||
8 | architect behind the restoration of the Old State Capitol in | ||||||
9 | the 1960s when the historic landmark was brought back to how it | ||||||
10 | appeared during Abraham Lincoln's era; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Wally Henderson was formerly a principal partner | ||||||
12 | at Ferry and Henderson Architects, where his projects included | ||||||
13 | the Springfield Municipal Plaza, the Willard Ice Building, the | ||||||
14 | Public Affairs Building at the University of Illinois in | ||||||
15 | Springfield, and the State Journal-Register Building; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, In 2013, Wally Henderson was awarded the 2013 | ||||||
17 | State Journal-Register First Citizen Award for "the breadth of | ||||||
18 | his contributions in Springfield"; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Wally Henderson is credited with working behind | ||||||
20 | the scenes to persuade the United States Mint to change plans | ||||||
21 | for the design of the 2009 commemorative penny so the design |

1 | would include a depiction of the Old State Capitol behind a | ||||||
2 | gesturing Abraham Lincoln; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Wally Henderson's many accomplishments throughout | ||||||
4 | his life include serving as Director and Director Emeritus of | ||||||
5 | the Abraham Lincoln Association; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Wally Henderson was a passionate supporter of the | ||||||
7 | City of Springfield, having once remarked that "Springfield has | ||||||
8 | so much potential. Anything that can be thought of can be done. | ||||||
9 | Anything that can improve Springfield, Illinois, we should be | ||||||
10 | working hard at"; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Wally Henderson's contributions to the City of | ||||||
12 | Springfield will far out last his 85 years of life and his | ||||||
13 | example of good citizenship will stand as a model for so many | ||||||
14 | in our community who wish to make the City of Springfield a | ||||||
15 | better place; and | ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Wally Henderson was a recognized role model, a | ||||||
17 | loving husband to his wife, Brynn, a devoted father to Kirstin, | ||||||
18 | Earl, Timothy, Rebecca, and Katherine, stepfather to | ||||||
19 | Christopher and Brynn, the loving grandfather of eight | ||||||
20 | grandchildren; and step-grandfather of three | ||||||
21 | step-grandchildren; therefore, be it

1 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
2 | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
3 | mourn the loss of Earl Wallace "Wally" Henderson, Jr., and | ||||||
4 | extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all | ||||||
5 | who knew and loved him; and be it further
| ||||||
6 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
7 | presented to the family of Wally Henderson as an expression of | ||||||
8 | our deepest sympathy.
