SENATE RESOLUTION

2    WHEREAS, Lung cancer kills, on average, 158,000 Americans
3every year, more than any other form of cancer; and

4    WHEREAS, While smoking is the most common cause of lung
5cancer, secondhand smoke exposure, radon, asbestos, and
6genetic disorders have also long been known to cause lung
7cancer; and

8    WHEREAS, The World Health Organization's International
9Agency for Research on Cancer recently added outdoor air
10pollution and particulate matter to the growing list of air
11pollutants known to cause lung cancer; and

12    WHEREAS, Although avoiding exposure to these carcinogens,
13e.g. cigarette smoke, asbestos, air pollution, etc., is the
14best way to prevent lung cancer, people cannot always avoid
15them because they are so widespread; and

16    WHEREAS, The 5-year survival rate for lung cancer is only
17about 17%, among the lowest of all types of cancer; and

18    WHEREAS, Early diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer
19greatly improves survival rates; however, most cases are not
20diagnosed until later stages; and

SR1203- 2 -LRB098 21330 GRL 59577 r

1    WHEREAS, Early diagnosis of lung cancer using low-dose CT
2scans has shown promise in a high risk population, but is not
3yet a generally accepted cancer screening method in the United
4States; and

5    WHEREAS, It is estimated that approximately 72,000
6American women will die of lung cancer in 2014, accounting for
726% of all female deaths due to cancer; and

8    WHEREAS, Someone in the United States is told that he or
9she has lung cancer every 2 1/2 minutes; therefore, be it

10    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
11ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we designate August 1,
122014 as World Lung Cancer Day in the State of Illinois in order
13to raise awareness of this growing health risk.
