HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of dedicated
4public servant Alan J. Dixon, who passed away on July 6, 2014;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, Alan J. Dixon was born on July 7, 1927 in
7Belleville; he graduated from the University of Illinois in
8Urbana in 1949 and Washington University School of Law in St.
9Louis, Missouri in 1949; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Alan J. Dixon served in the United States Navy Air
11Corps during World War II; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Alan J. Dixon was admitted to the bar and began
13practicing law in Belleville in 1949, the same year he was
14first elected to public office; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Alan J. Dixon served as a member of the Illinois
16House of Representatives from 1951 to 1963 and as a member of
17the Illinois Senate from 1963 to 1971; he served as Illinois
18State Treasurer from 1971 to 1977, and as Illinois Secretary of
19State from 1977 to 1981 before being elected to the United
20States Senate in 1980; he was re-elected in 1986 and continued
21to serve in this position until 1993; and

1    WHEREAS, Alan J. Dixon dedicated his life to public service
2and to the improvement of the State of Illinois and all of its
3residents; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Alan J. Dixon served the people of Illinois
5faithfully for over 40 years; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Alan J. Dixon served his State with honesty,
7integrity, and commitment; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Alan J. Dixon was a dear friend to the members of
9this body and to countless others in and out of public service
10in this State; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Alan J. Dixon is survived by his wife, Joan "Jody"
12Dixon; 3 children, Stephanie (Doug) Yearian, Jeffrey (Stacy)
13Dixon, and Elizabeth (Stuart) Megaw; 8 grandchildren; and 6
14great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
16NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
17we mourn the passing of Alan J. Dixon and extend our sincere
18condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
19him; and be it further
