HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Stanley D. Banash "Tex" on
4the publication of his third book, Roadside History of Illinois
5(Mountain Press, 2013); and
 
6    WHEREAS, Roadside History of Illinois is the first book in
7more than 30 years to focus on the history of the State; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Roadside History of Illinois is designed to
9educate and guide motorists and tourists along old U.S.
10highways, State roadways, and county roads to the people,
11places, and events that contributed to the State's historic
12development; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Roadside History of Illinois highlights the 7
14regions of the State - Southern Illinois: Between the Great
15Rivers; Western Illinois: Utopia on the Prairie; Central
16Illinois: Lincoln's Legacy; Eastern Illinois: More than You
17Expect; Northern Illinois: Rock River and Beyond; Greater
18Chicagoland: Metropolitan Diversity; and Chicago: City of
19Neighborhoods; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Roadside History of Illinois provides more than
21125 historic and modern images and features over 250 cities,

1towns, and villages; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Roadside History of Illinois includes a special
3introduction by the late Dee Brown, author of the
4internationally acclaimed book, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee,
5and a former agriculture librarian at the University of
6Illinois at Champaign-Urbana; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Roadside History of Illinois has been praised by
8former U.S. Senator Adlai E. Stevenson III and Chief Deputy
9Director of the Illinois State Archives Wayne C. Temple, Ph.D.;
10and
 
11    WHEREAS, Stan Banash retains a great love of Illinois,
12Civil War, and Old West history that began at an early age and
13continues to this day; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Stan Banash served 4 years in the United States
15Air Force (Strategic Air Command), graduated from Northwestern
16University with a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in Political
17Science (1968), and graduated from Roosevelt University with a
18Master of Arts degree in Urban Studies (1972), and owned and
19operated a home-based public relations, association
20management, and political consulting business (1972-2014); and
 
21    WHEREAS, Stan Banash served as an administrative assistant

1for press relations to Lt. Gov. Neil F. Hartigan (1973-1974)
2and served as Executive Director of the Illinois Law Revision
3Commission (1976-1984); and
 
4    WHEREAS, Stan Banash authored more than 10 feature articles
5for various national and local publications and reviewed more
6than 30 books for national publications; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Stan Banash authored 2 earlier books - Best of Dee
8Brown's West (Clear Light, 1998) and Dee Brown's Civil War
9Anthology (Clear Light, 1998); and
 
10    WHEREAS, Stan Banash became knowledgeable about a
11life-saving maneuver after attending a private luncheon with
12Dr. Henry Heimlich, who devised the Heimlich Maneuver to save a
13person's life when choking and brought the maneuver to the
14attention of State Rep. Ralph C. Capparelli, who authored the
15legislation in 1976 and again in 1977 to make it mandatory for
16all eating establishments in Illinois to display a poster that
17explains the life-saving procedure on choking victims as
18devised by Dr. Henry Heimlich; the legislation became law on
19January 1, 1978 and, since then, Stan Banash has been called
20upon to use the Heimlich Maneuver 3 times, thereby, saving the
21lives of 3 people; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Stan Banash wrote the speech delivered by Billy

1Williams of the Chicago Cubs during his induction into the
2National Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, New York on July
326, 1987; and
 
4    WHEREAS, The speech also included the previously unknown
5information that former Baseball Commissioner Albert B.
6"Happy" Chandler overruled the league's 15 owners who earlier
7opposed the entry of Jackie Robinson into the National League,
8to bring Jackie Robinson up to the Brooklyn Dodgers; if
9Commissioner Chandler had not taken the action when he did,
10Jackie Robinson would not have broken the color barrier in
111947; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Stan Banash has been an active member of his
13community, serving as Secretary (1985-1987) and President
14(1988-1994) of the Edison Park Chamber of Commerce, Chairperson
15of the 41st Ward Zoning Advisory Board (1993-2011), established
16by 41 Ward Aid. Brian Doherty, and Sheriff of the
17Westerners-Chicago Corral (1996-2001); and
 
18    WHEREAS, Stan Banash is a member of the Western Writers of
19America, Society of Midland Authors, Western History
20Association, Westerners-Chicago Corral, Westerners
21International, and American Legion Edison Park Post 541;
22therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
2NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
3we congratulate Stanley D. Banash on the release of his third
4book, Roadside History of Illinois, wish him continued success
5in his writing and in his efforts to further the history of
6Illinois among its residents, and we wish him happiness in the
7future; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9presented to Stanley D. Banash as a symbol of our esteem and
10respect.
