SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of William Henry Schroeder of Long Lake, who
4passed away on December 17, 2011; and
 
5    WHEREAS, He was born in Libertyville on February 28, 1929,
6the son of the late Lydia and Marshall Schroeder; and
 
7    WHEREAS, He graduated from the University of Illinois,
8Urbana-Champaign and was staff sergeant in the United States
9Army during the Korean War; William; with his father, Marshall
10R. Schroeder, founded Lakeland Newspapers in 1956 and was a
11charter member of the Suburban Press Foundation (SPF),
12predecessor to the Suburban Newspapers of America; he was
13president of the Illinois Press Association (IPA), the largest
14State newspaper group in the country; and
 
15    WHEREAS, He organized and began the Illinois Press
16Foundation (IPF), a committee comprised of former IPA
17presidents who helped solidify the organization in the area of
18endowments and support services for the newspaper industry; he
19was also involved with the Suburban Newspapers of America; he
20was recognized for numerous journalism accomplishments during
21his 55-year newspaper career; he received the Illinois Press
22Association's "Best in State" newspapers honors 3 times and

1also won the 2002 CHINFO award for the best military newspaper
2in the world; he also helped locate and finance the Illinois
3Press Association's headquarters in Springfield; and
 
4    WHEREAS, He was the winner of the 2003 SNA Dean Lescher
5national award for lifetime journalism achievements; he was
6active in many Lake County chambers of commerce, the Navy
7League, the Illinois Press Foundation Board of Directors, the
8Lake County Fair, serving as historian, the Red Cross, and the
9Long Lake Yacht Club, where he served as Commodore and Judge;
10he also served on the boards of Condell Hospital, Fox Lake
11State Bank, and Carmel Catholic High School; and
 
12    WHEREAS, His favorite hobbies were gardening, boating,
13reading, music, and rooting for the Chicago Cubs; and
 
14    WHEREAS, William Schroeder is survived by his wife of
15almost 50 years, Nancy; his children, William (Lisa), Jill
16(Bill) McDermott, Karen (Jim) Miller, and Robert (Elise); his
17grandchildren Erika, John, Alexandra, Nicole, Thomas,
18Caroline, Marshall, and William; and his brother, Robert
19(Elizabeth) Schroeder; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
21ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
22his family and friends, the passing of William Schroeder; and
