HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to honor Chinta Strausberg for her
4work in journalism; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Chinta Strausberg was born on the South Side of
6Chicago where her parents lived in her maternal grandfather's
7"family-only" building; she later moved to Markham, where she
8lived until the age of 16; she then lived with her maternal
9grandmother's best friend, Ora Higgins, for a year before
10getting her own apartment while in her senior year at John
11Marshall Harlan High School; she subsequently worked at Sears
12Roebuck & Co., getting off work at midnight and attending
13college during the day; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Chinta Strausberg met and married her husband,
15Bernard, at the age of 21; following his passing, she moved
16back to Chicago and returned to the Chicago Public Library,
17where she worked as a senior library clerk; she later worked
18for the federal government and the University of Illinois; she
19later began working on the second shift at First National Bank
20as a computer operator; while working at First National Bank,
21she graduated from Roosevelt University, where she majored in
22journalism; after taking several undergraduate courses in
23journalism at Northwestern University and attending at

1Medill's School of Journalism in Evanston for a semester, she
2became a proof-reader/copy editor for the American Hospital
3Association (AHA); while working full time at the AHA, she
4worked at WSSD radio as a newscaster, weekly talk show host,
5acting news director, and acting public affairs director; and
 
6    WHEREAS, When there were discussions of closing the WSSD
7radio station, Chinta Strausberg accepted an offer by the
8managing editor of the Chicago Defender to join the paper; she
9was officially put on the Defender's payroll on May 10, 1981;
10she worked for the Chicago Defender for 23 1/2 years as the
11paper's political reporter, covering city, county, State,
12federal, national, and international news; she worked in the
13paper's City Hall newsroom until she resigned on April 30,
142004, when she began working for then-Lieutenant Governor Pat
15Quinn as senior policy advisor and director of constituent
16services; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Chinta Strausberg resigned from the Lieutenant
18Governor's office on February 2, 2006 to work for late Cook
19County Board President John H. Stroger, Jr. as director of
20communications and public affairs; following the election of
21Mr. Stroger's son as Board President, she briefly served as his
22director of communications before becoming his assistant; and
 
23    WHEREAS, Chinta Strausberg currently serves as director of

1communications for the re-election campaign of United States
2Representative Bobby L. Rush; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Chinta Strausberg is a faithful servant at Saint
4Sabina Church, where she has been affiliated since 1982; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Chinta Strausberg will be honored for her civic
6rights and journalism work at an event in her honor on March
712, 2012 at Hardtime Josephine's Cookin' in Chicago; therefore,
8be it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
10NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
11we honor Chinta Strausberg for her work and wish her continued
12success and happiness in her future endeavors; and be it
13further
 
14    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15presented to Chinta Strausberg as a symbol of our esteem and
16respect.
