HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate the Selfreliance
4Ukrainian American Federal Credit Union (SUAFCU) on 60 years of
5service; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Selfreliance Ukrainian American Federal Credit
7Union (SUAFCU) celebrated 60 years of service on September 21,
82011; the organization has helped countless Ukrainian families
9and businesses in the State of Illinois live the American
10dream; and
 
11    WHEREAS, SUAFCU was founded on May 12, 1951, by Anton
12Artymowycz, Roman Mycyk, Alexander Atanowsky, Stefan
13Sambirsky, Bohdan Bilynsky, Elias Semianczuk, Joseph Datzko,
14Walter Tymciurak, Gregory Masnyk, and Elias Wytanowycz as a
15financial cooperative whose mission was to benefit local
16members of the Ukrainian American community; and
 
17    WHEREAS, The men signed the Organization Certificate of
18Selfreliance Federal Credit Union and the Certificate was
19approved on June 20, 1951 by the Director of the Bureau of
20Federal Credit Unions; on July 2, 1951, William T. Breitzke,
21representing the Illinois Credit Union League, presented
22Federal Credit Union Charter #7346 to the credit union's newly

1elected board of directors; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Selfreliance Ukrainian American Federal Credit
3Union is open to anyone of Ukrainian descent or members of
4other Ukrainian organizations, SUAFCU stays very focused on its
5original mission; the democratic tenets to which the Union
6strictly adheres make it a unique institution that provides an
7example of what hard working communities can achieve; and
 
8    WHEREAS, During its first 15 years, SUAFCU was incredibly
9active, providing its members with over $4,156,000 in loans;
10thanks to the responsible lending practices of this community,
11many Ukrainian doctors, dentists, and veterinarians were able
12to found successful practices; dozens of other businesses
13opened thanks to SUAFCU, but just as important, 1200 families
14were able to purchase homes in the Chicago area; and
 
15    WHEREAS, This community came together to exemplify the
16American dream through smart practices and a closely-knit
17community; around these businesses, the "Ukrainian Village"
18prospered into a network of interconnected community
19organizations including cultural and social clubs and
20churches; SUAFCU works closely with churches and others to
21ensure the assimilation process is less difficult for Ukrainian
22immigrants, a population that brings diversity and new ideas to
23the area; and

1    WHEREAS, SUAFCU continues to prosper and help families and
2businesses under current President and CEO Bohdan Watral and
3Chairman of the Board of Directors Michael Kos, two strong
4advocates for Ukrainian Americans; therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
6NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
7we congratulate the Selfreliance Ukrainian American Federal
8Credit Union on their anniversary and wish them the best for
9years to come; and be it further
 
10    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11presented to Selfreliance Ukrainian American Federal Credit
12Union President and CEO Bohdan Watral and Chairman of the Board
13of Directors Michael Kos as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
