HOUSE RESOLUTION

    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3
Representatives are pleased to honor the life of Dr. James 
4
Barushok of Northeastern Illinois University; and

 
5
    WHEREAS, For 15 of his 30 years at Northeastern, James 
6
Barushok chaired the Department of Speech and Performing Arts; 
7
he contributed significantly to the growth and development of 
8
the department and was instrumental in the creation of its 
9
graduate program, which continued under his guidance as the 
10
department's Director of Graduate Studies; and

 
11
    WHEREAS, He was an exemplary teacher; his students and 
12
colleagues benefitted not only from his expertise in theatre 
13
history, theory, and interpretation but from his 
14
accessibility, availability, and his willingness to serve as a 
15
guide and mentor; and

 
16
    WHEREAS, Outside the classroom Dr. Barushok  directed more 
17
than fifty theatrical productions, including works by 
18
Shakespeare, Ibsen, and Shaw; he acted in over 30 productions; 
19
and he founded two theatre programs, one at the University of 
20
Maine and one in Chicago; and

 
21
    WHEREAS, Dr. Barushok was an active participant and office

holder in the Speech Communication Association and the American 
2
Theatre Association, and served on several North Central 
3
Accreditation Association visitation committees; and

 
4
    WHEREAS, Dr. Barushok had a long record of service to the 
5
college and the university including serving as a University 
6
Advisor, as a member of the University Theatre Advisory Board 
7
and the Fine Arts General Education Outcomes Task Force, as 
8
well as chairing the University Faculty Excellence Awards 
9
Committee and serving as president of the University Senate; 
10
his dedication and readiness to serve made him an invaluable 
11
member of the university community and he takes with him the 
12
respect and appreciation of his students and colleagues; 
13
therefore, be it

    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
15
NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
16
honor the life of Dr. James Barushok, who died on Saturday, May 
17
5, 2007; and be it further

 
18
    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
19
presented to Dr. James Barushok's family as a symbol of our 
20
respect and esteem.
