SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 were saddened to learn of the death of Serina Mary Fortineaux
4 Smith of Hazelcrest on November 21, 2003; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith was born on December 6, 1925 in New
6 Orleans, Louisiana to Arthur and Scurina Fortineaux; the family
7 moved to Chicago in 1938; and
 
8     WHEREAS, She was attending Washburn Trade School in Chicago
9 when she met and fell in love with William Smith; to their
10 union, eight children were born: Bathsheba, Carmensieta,
11 Sherry, Shelita, Artheria, William Joseph, Fedencia, Venetia,
12 and her step-daughter Rosetta; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith was a very hard worker and held several
14 jobs before becoming an entrepreneur; she and her family lived
15 on the South Side of Chicago and purchased a cleaning business
16 and grocery store; upon her husband's death, she continued to
17 operate their store until she went into semi-retirement; she
18 decided to open up her own convenient store where she worked
19 for several years; and
 
20     WHEREAS, She accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior
21 at Hazelcrest Assembly Church in Hazelcrest; and
 
22     WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith's passing will be deeply felt by many,
23 especially her sister, Dardina; her brother, Arthur; her seven
24 daughters; her twenty-eight grandchildren; her thirty-four
25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild, all of
26 whom affectionately called her "Granny"; her sons-in-law,
27 nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; and
 
28     WHEREAS, She was preceded in death by her parents, her
29 sister, Mathilda; her brother, Warren; her husband, William;

1 and her son, William Joseph; therefore, be it
 
2     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL
3 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of
4 Serina Mary Fortineaux Smith along with all who knew and loved
5 her and extend our sincere condolences to her family and
6 friends; and be it further
 
7     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8 presented to the family of Serina Mary Fortineaux Smith as an
9 expression of our deepest sympathy.
