 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, The members of the House of  Representatives  of
 3    the  State of Illinois were saddened to learn of the death of
 4    Lloyd M. Bertholf,  former  president  of  Illinois  Wesleyan
 5    University,  who  passed  away on Monday, January 20, 2003 at
 6    the age of 103; and

 7        WHEREAS, Lloyd Bertholf was born on December 15, 1899  in
 8    Wichita, Kansas; he married Martha, who preceded him in death
 9    in 1999 at the age of 101; and

10        WHEREAS,  He  was a nationally regarded biologist and was
11    renowned for his research on the physiology and  behavior  of
12    honeybees;  he  was  a  graduate  of  Southwestern College in
13    Winfield, Kansas; he received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from
14    Johns Hopkins  University  in  Baltimore,  where  he  studied
15    zoology  and  chemistry;  under  a Rockefeller fellowship, he
16    conducted post-doctoral research into insect behavior in 1930
17    and 1931 at the University of Munich  in  Germany,  where  he
18    worked with famed scientist Karl von Frisch; and

19        WHEREAS,   He  taught  biology  and  zoology  at  several
20    colleges, serving as dean at  two  colleges  prior  to  being
21    elected  president of Illinois Wesleyan in 1957; he served as
22    a science consultant to Ewha  Women's  University  in  Seoul,
23    South Korea in 1969 and 1970; and

24        WHEREAS,  He  was  Illinois Wesleyan's 14th president and
25    during  his   presidency,   Illinois   Wesleyan   experienced
26    significant  growth  in  enrollment,  faculty, academics, and
27    campus  value;  the  University's  School  of   Nursing   was
28    established during his presidency; he pioneered the May Term,
29    and  worked  closely with students, introducing policies that
30    gave the Student Senate full authority over student  activity
31    fees   and   initiated   student   membership  on  university
32    committees; and

 1        WHEREAS, Following his retirement from Illinois Wesleyan,
 2    he was president for one year of the Central  States  College
 3    Association,  a  consortium  of 11 Midwest campuses; he was a
 4    member of four academic  honor  societies:  Phi  Beta  Kappa,
 5    Sigma  Xi,  Phi  Kappa  Phi, and Beta Beta Beta, the national
 6    biology honorary, serving as the group's  national  president
 7    from 1946 to 1953; he was the recipient of an honorary doctor
 8    of humanities degree from Illinois Wesleyan in 1975; and

 9        WHEREAS,  He was active in Methodist activities; he was a
10    member of the Wesley  Methodist  Church  in  Bloomington  and
11    served  on  its  Board  of  Stewards  and  the  Commission on
12    Stewardship and Finance; he was also a member of the  General
13    Board  of Lay activities of the Methodist General Conference;
14    in 1966, he was a delegate to the World Methodist  Conference
15    in London; and

16        WHEREAS,   He   served   as   president  of  Region  3-B,
17    Comprehensive  Health  Planning   Agency,   an   organization
18    encompassing  16  counties  in  east-central  Illinois, was a
19    member of the board  of  directors  of  the  Rotary  Club  in
20    Bloomington,  and  was  president  of  the IWU Federal Credit
21    Union; and

22        WHEREAS, The passing of Lloyd M. Bertholf will be  deeply
23    felt  by  all who knew him, especially his daughter, Dr. Lynn
24    B. Westcot; his son, Dr. Max E.  (Nancy)  Bertholf;  his  six
25    grandchildren; his eight great-grandchildren; and his sister,
26    Faye McCoy; therefore, be it

27        RESOLVED,   BY   THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES  OF  THE
28    NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS,  that
29    together with his family and friends, we mourn the passing of
30    Lloyd  M. Bertholf, who will be remembered as a man of strong
31    integrity and great vision and his legacy of  dedicated  work
32    on  behalf  of  Illinois Wesleyan University will not be soon

 1    forgotten; and be it further

 2        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
 3    presented  to  the  family  of  Lloyd  M.  Bertholf  with our
 4    sincerest condolences.
