SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of William D. "Bill" Gissel of Aledo, who
4passed away on May 4, 2023; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Bill Gissel was born to William A. and Genevieve
6(Permantier) Gissel in Chicago on June 14, 1947; he earned his
7bachelor's degree from St. Ambrose University; he received his
8commission in the U.S. Navy, and he immediately entered flight
9training, earning his wings and serving as a naval aviator,
10primarily flying H-3s; he served as a member of the Apollo 17
11recovery team; he married Antoinette "Ann" Bauwens in Rock
12Island on December 27, 1969; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Bill Gissel had numerous interests and excelled
14at many things; he loved being in nature, whether riding his
15quad, gardening, doing yard work, or simply enjoying the
16outdoors; he was an avid reader and a student of history, and
17his vast expertise of the Civil War era was a culmination of
18extensive studies and exploration of countless battlefields;
19he was also a talented builder, spanning woodworking and
20remodeling to designing and creating structures; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Bill Gissel was known for his larger-than-life
22personality, always being ready with a good story or a joke,

1and his generous, welcoming nature; he loved spending time
2with his family and beloved dogs, whether he was at home,
3driving around the local area, or traveling; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Bill Gissel was preceded in death by his parents;
5his brother, Thaddeus; and his sisters, Mary McChesney and
6Heidi Baker; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Bill Gissel is survived by his wife, Ann; his
8children, Will Gissel, Nicholas Gissel, and Sarah (Yon) Hafer;
9his grandchildren, Yvonne and Helen; and his siblings,
10Madeleine Bartsch, Susan (Aldo) Bon, and John (Carrie) Gissel;
11therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
14William D. "Bill" Gissel and extend our sincere condolences to
15his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
16further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Bill Gissel as an expression of our
19deepest sympathy.
